Wolves Soccer continues their winning spree

The Green River Wolves are on fire, as they won two more conference games over the weekend and remain on top in the 3A West Division despite their loss to Lander on Tuesday. They had won their eighth consecutive conference win of the season, and then had an unfortunate loss to the Lander Tigers.

On Friday, the Wolves hosted a conference game against the Lyman Eagles. During the first half of the game, Green River scored four goals while Lyman was unable to put the ball in the net. Green River continued to dominate the game, scoring five more goals and winning with a final score of 9-0.

Leading the team were Braxton Doak with three goals, Jaxon Morris with two goals and Maddux Hintz, Stone Rubeck, Izyk Arellano and Eddie Zarate with one goal each. Irie Kuball took six shots during the game, along with multiple shots from Aiden Falcon, Axel MacKinnon and Dominick Littlefield. Goalkeepers Zarate and Jake Demaret had one save each at the net.

"We had a lot of chances on goal," said Head Coach Josh Webb. "We were trying a new formation that will give us more attack on the top. They did very well and executed it very well."

On Saturday, the Wolves hosted another conference game against the Mountain View Buffalos. It was a much closer game as the Buffalos are a tough team. The scoreboard was help at 0-0 after the first half of the game. In the second half, the Wolves scored two goals and walked off the field with another win. The final score was 2-0.

Leading the team were Doak and Kuball with one goal each. Doak took nine shots during the game, along with shots from Falcon, Littlefield, Kuball and Arellano. Goalkeeper Zarate had two saves during the game.

Coach Webb said that Mountain View's midfield is tough, along with a strong physical backline. He said the team learned that even with using a new formation, the boys are successfully getting in behind the line, but now they need to work on finishing.

On Tuesday, the Wolves hosted their final home game of the season against the Lander Tigers. The Wolves struggled finding the net the first half of the game and ultimately lost the game with a final score of 1-2. The Wolves celebrated their senior players Eddie Zarate, Axel Mackinnon, Stone Rubeck, Christian Lee, Dusten Berg, Adrian Ruiz, and Francisco Valenzuela.

"I think we can learn from it, be humbled," explained Coach Webb. "We were having a lot of success, a lot of shots, a lot of everything, but sometimes you have those games where you can't find the back of the net. I think there was a lot of pressure on them and now that that pressure is off, we're going to go back to the table and start grinding everything out, getting back to why we play soccer for the love of the game and why we want to be the best. We improve off of every loss."

The Wolves will travel to Pinedale on Friday to take on the Wranglers at 5 p.m. The season will be coming to an end in May when Green River competes in the 3A State Championships that take place in Green River on May 16 through 18.

"I'm lucky to be their coach," added Coach Webb. "This has been one of the best groups of kids I've ever coached. They work really hard and it's fun."
