One of the Lady Wolves' championship swimmers will be jumping into the water in Colorado.
Green River High School Senior Brianna Uhrig recently signed her letter of intent to swim for the Grizzlies at Adams State University in Alamosa, Colorado.
Uhrig explained that she had reached out to a few different colleges as she considered where to go. Adams State responded and she got to take a tour of the school.
"I really enjoyed the campus and the area, and the coach is awesome," Uhrig said. "And they have a great nursing program."
Having both good swimming and nursing opportunities was important to Uhrig, who plans to study nursing with the possibilities of one day being a travel nurse or a nurse practitioner.
As she furthers her swimming career as well, Uhrig will continue to focus on building her areas of strength. Her main event is the 100 Meter Breaststroke, although she anticipates competing in the 200 Meter Breaststroke and 200 Meter IM (individual medley) as well.
"I think the competition and the training will definitely be harder," Uhrig said, considering how swimming at a college level will be different from high school. "I think it will be a good change."
While she's ready for the next step, Uhrig is thankful for her time swimming as a Lady Wolf, especially after being a conference champion twice and "being part of a team that is very successful," having won three state championships.
Uhrig is also grateful for the lessons she has learned from swimming, including "not giving up when things get hard" and the ability to "keep working to achieve your goals."
When she leaves, Uhrig's absence among the Lady Wolves' swimmers will be felt.
"We're going to miss her being on our team and miss her leadership and just her smile every day," Head Coach Colleen Seiloff said.
Uhrig has been an important part of the team ever since she joined as a freshman, according to Seiloff. She excelled in the breaststroke, as did the other Uhrig girls who were on the team. But she's also done well in IM events, been an important part of relays, and been a strong swimmer in general. It was a pleasure to coach her, Seiloff said.
"She just did a fantastic job," the coach added. "I think the big thing has been her personality, not just what she contributed in the water, but what she contributed out of the water."
While she will be sad to see such a strong team member leave, Seiloff also expressed how excited she is for the awesome opportunities Uhrig will have.
"I'm just very excited that she's decided to continue to swim because I know that she's going to go and she's going to do a great job and just have a wonderful experience," Seiloff said.
