Wolves Softball struggles with errors, loses to Rock Springs Tigers

The Green River Wolves Softball team traveled to play a doubleheader against the Rock Springs Tigers last Thursday.

During the first game, the Wolves struggled with some errors and bringing their runners home. Green River was unable to score in the first three innings of the game, while Rock Springs got on the board in the second inning with three runs. The Tigers continued to bring in the runs and outscored Green River for the rest of the game. The Wolves lost with a final score of 2-8.

Leading the Wolves was Haidyn Terry batting in two runs. Kodi Allred and Chacee Shiner had one run each. Terry pitched six innings, allowing eight runs on nine hits, striking out seven and walking one player.

In the second game, Green River started off great in the first inning when Gina Barajas singled and brought in one run. At the end of the first inning, the score was tied 4-4. In the second inning, Rock Springs pulled ahead after an error from Green River. The Tigers scored three more runs while the Wolves were unable to score. Green River scored one more run in the third inning, but was unable to catch up to Rock Springs for the rest of the game. The Wolves lost the game with a final score of 5-11.

Leading the team were Danielle Maag batting in two runs and Kelley and Shiner each collecting two hits. Kelley, Barajas, Allred, Shiner and Terryn Avery (Cassie Kelley was the pinch runner for Avery) had one run each during the game. Avery pitched four innings, allowing 11 runs on eight hits, striking out one and walking five players.

"We just need to cut down on errors and capitalize on opportunities that we are given," said Head Coach Blair McEndaffer when asked about the loss to Rock Springs. "We played good enough to win but Rock Springs just played better."

Rock Springs was able to hit the ball to open spots in the field and Green River unfortunately hit the ball right to the other team. Green River has been leaving a lot of runners on base and making errors in big pivotal moments during the game. Coach McEndaffer said they need to eliminate these errors and get back to winning games. She said when they keep it under two errors in a game, they win. When they get more than that, they "dig themselves a hole that they can't get out of."

The Wolves are still continuing the Hits Against Hunger Food Drive during their home games. They are asking the community to help by bringing donations to Veterans Field, and the donations will be given to the Food Bank of Sweetwater County. Donations the food bank can accept include perishable foods (meat - as long as it has been professionally packaged and dairies, refrigerated and freezer food items) non-perishable foods (canned foods, dry packaged food items), baby food/diapers, children's books, and personal items (shampoo, toothpaste, soap).

Green River will host a doubleheader against the Natrona County Fillies on Friday at 3:30 and 5 p.m. They will host another doubleheader against the Kelly Walsh Trojans on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. During the game on Saturday, the Wolves will honor their senior players. There are eight seniors they will be saying goodbye to after this season, including Terryn Avery, Aaliyah Casper, Laynie Fundell, Gina Barajas, Autumn Cooper, Abby Harrison, Emma Olson and team manager Maisie Peter.

On April 6, the Wolves were unable to play the Worland Warriors because of the weather. The games have been rescheduled for Tuesday, April 23 at 1:30 and 3 p.m.
