Wolves Softball team fights strong winds Friday, games canceled on Saturday

The Green River Wolves Softball team battled the strong winds last Friday as they took on the Cody Fillies.

Their first game of the day was their conference game. The Wolves held Cody from scoring in the first two innings, and the score stayed 0-0. During the third inning, Cody scored four runs while Green River was unable to score. Cody kept bringing in the runs during the rest of the game, while the Wolves still struggled to score. Green River scored two runs during the game and lost with a final score of 2-10.

Leading the team were Kodi Allred and Chacee Shiner with one run each. Danielle Maag and Shiner each drove in one run for the Wolves. Haidyn Terry pitched seven innings, allowing 10 runs on 16 hits, striking out one and walking one player.

During the second game, Green River started stronger, bringing in four runs in the second inning and tying the game 4-4. In the third inning, Cody flew by the Wolves, scoring five runs while Green River scored one more run in the fifth inning. The Wolves had 10 hits to Cody’s nine, but it wasn’t enough to take the lead away from Cody. Green River lost the game with a final score of 5-9.

Leading the team was Allred with two runs, along with Izzy Kelley, Shiner and Maag with one run each. Terryn Avery hit a double during the third inning that helped tie the game.

Avery pitched over two innings, allowing seven hits and nine runs, striking out one and walking eight players. Terry also pitched almost three innings, allowing zero runs on two hits, striking out none and walking one player.

Head Coach Blair McEndaffer thinks the girls didn’t play as well as they could have. She said they weren’t executing regular plays and she feels they can’t win games when they consistently give six outs to the other team in an inning.

“We have to cut down on the errors and mental mistakes,” she explained. “Cody is a great team but we definitely should have hung with them more and it should have been closer than it was.”

The games against Worland on Saturday were canceled.

Green River’s next game will be against the Wolves’ rival team, the Rock Springs Tigers.

“It’s always going to be a close game,” said Coach McEndaffer. “The girls have been working really hard at practice. We are on that cusp of something great and the kids know what they need to do.”

The Wolves will travel to play a doubleheader against Rock Springs today at 3:30 and 5 p.m.
