Wolves Softball start off season in Gillette

The Green River Wolves Girls Softball team was scheduled to play in the Cheyenne Invitational with a large number of teams from across the state last weekend. Due to the winter storm that dumped quite a bit of snow, the tournament was canceled.

With some amazing planning and lots of help, the Wolves were fortunate enough to get to travel to Gillette to compete in the Gillette Tournament on Saturday. Green River played three games during the tournament.

Green River played their first game against the two-time State Champions, the Thunder Basin Bolts. Thunder Basin got on the board during the first inning and kept playing strong throughout the game. Haidyn Terry pitched four innings and gave up 15 runs on 15 hits, striking out one and walking one player. During the game, Kodi Allred and Chacee Shiner both had one hit each for the Wolves. Green River struggled through the game with errors and lost with a final score of 0-15.

The Wolves’ second game was against the Natrona County Fillies. Natrona County had the lead throughout the game. Terryn Avery, Allred, Izzy Kelley, Terry, Gina Barajas and Imagin Wilde each had one hit during the game. Allred hit a home run to center field that brought in three runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Avery pitched three innings and gave up 12 runs on six hits, striking out one and walking one player. Natrona County scored seven runs in the fourth inning that sealed their win against Green River. The Wolves lost with a final score of 3-13.

Green River’s last game of the day was against the Wheatland Bulldogs. The Wolves had the lead in the first inning of the game after Allred hit a double, scoring one run, and Terry hit a single, scoring two runs. Wheatland caught up in the beginning of the second inning and tied the game. Wheatland took the lead in the beginning of the third inning with a score of 5-3. Green River struggled to keep up with Wheatland for the rest of the game and lost with a final score of 7-13. Terry pitched five innings and gave up 13 runs on 17 hits, striking out three and walking four players. Terry also led the Wolves with three runs batted in and two hits, along with Shiner with two hits.

“Disappointing. Very disappointing,” said Head Coach Blair McEndaffer when asked how the girls played during the Gillette Tournament. “I was definitely expecting them to do better than they did.”

Coach McEndaffer feels the teams they played didn’t flat-out beat them. Green River had over seven errors per game, and it’s hard to win games when that happens. So she feels they beat themselves. The Wolves will continue to work hard in practices, and hopefully for their next games they will be able to apply what they have learned in practices on the field.

Green River will travel to play their first Conference game, a doubleheader against the Kelly Walsh Trojans, on Friday, and will play another doubleheader against the Natrona County Fillies on Saturday.
