Wolves Soccer team heads into new season

The Green River Wolves Soccer team hit the field practicing on Monday, March 4. The boys are working hard and being observed by the coaches to see which athletes will make the Varsity team this year. With lots of conditioning and scrimmaging, the coaches are getting a good idea of how the boys will hold up under pressure.

The Wolves have a few new freshman that have joined the team this year, along with a couple seniors that have joined for the first time. Some of the key returning players for the Wolves are Axel Mackinnon, Stone Rubeck, Braxton Doak, Dustyn Berg, Maddux Hintz, Guy Grace, Izyk Arellano and Eddie Zarate.

"I'm hoping to pick up right where we left off," said Head Coach Josh Webb. "I'm concentrating a lot on mindset. I think we let a little bit of our mindset go. But I see a lot of talent and a lot of good boys."

This will be Coach Webb's second year of coaching the boys team. He has brought a lot of great experience to the team as he has been coaching in different positions for over ten years. They had an amazing first season, ending the year with a 12-3 record. Green River earned their place and competed in the State Championships last year. At the Championships, they lost their first game against Torrington and won the next two games against Powell and Lander. They ended their season as the 3A State Consolation Champions.

Coach Webb said he is very fortunate to have a great coaching staff assisting him. The assistant coaches and volunteers are Tina Rodriguez, Toby Trumble, Greg Doak and Perri Rubeck.

During the offseason, the soccer team held open gyms since November. Boys that weren't playing other sports had the opportunity to play matches put together through the Rock Springs Avengers, with both a Varsity and a JV team.

"We built two teams so we could retain all the high school players and give them a place to play in Sweetwater County," explained Coach Webb. "That's what we used for the offseason to get touches on the ball."

Coach Webb is very excited for the season to start. He said the boys have grown so much since last year and he is looking forward to seeing how they play against the competition.

Green River will travel to Worland to play in their first tournament of the season on March 22 and 23. Their first home game will be against Pinedale on March 28.
