Scoreboards among funding requests for SCSD No. 2 Rec Board

Changes and improvements are coming to Sweetwater County School District No. 2, and the community of Green River as a whole, thanks to a number of new projects and support from the District Rec Board.

The Rec Board had a meeting on Tuesday night before the regular School Board meeting, during which they heard a number of requests for funding from both the school district and community groups, all of which were approved.

New scoreboards for both the high school football field and aquatics center were part of the requests from the school district, and scoreboards for city fields were included in the community requests.

Athletic Director Tony Beardsley presented the request to update the scoreboard system for Wolves Stadium, noting that the funds are being requested now in order to aim to have the project completed by next summer. The request was to earmark money for the project up to but not exceeding $200,000.

"Our ideal plan is to have a video scoreboard on one end of the field and a regular scoreboard on the other end of the field, and also have a play clock on each end of the field," Beardsley explained. He noted that this system could be used for other sports as well, such as Track and Field.

The board noted that the current scoreboard was installed in the 1990s.

Aquatics Supervisor Mike Moody presented the request for a new touchpad timing and scoring system for the Green River High School Aquatic Center, as well as a new scoreboard. Moody explained that the current touchpads are almost 10 years old, and many have quit working, but the company they came from no longer services the equipment. In moving to a new company to supply the touchpads, there was discussion of how well they would work with the old scoreboard, which is also roughly 10 years old. The proposal was to replace both systems, with the touchpads not to exceed $57,000 and the scoreboard not to exceed $52,000.

Board Member Mark Sanders questioned if having video technology in the new scoreboards would require additional equipment and create future costs. Beardsley noted that the companies being considered for the football field scoreboard provide equipment and training in their costs, and students interested in technology could help run the system.

The City of Green River is also looking to add some new scoreboards, and made a request for $24,835 for four new boards at community baseball and football fields.

Another school district request involved expanding the Wolverine Disc Golf Course at Lincoln Middle School. PE Teacher Mikel Hoopes explained the success of the disc golf course in the school and the desire to add nine new holes to make it bigger and easier to accommodate tournaments. Hoopes pointed out that the community is increasingly using the course as well, and the expansion could allow for future opportunities for things like tournaments and rec leagues. The funding request for the expansion was for $6,000.

The other district funding requests were for $39,000 to continue the successful weight room program and cover coaches salaries for the third year, as well as a request to bring back a lifeguard position for the aquatics center, which was expected to be a little over $27,000.

Other community requests included both continuing projects which have been done in the past and adding new projects. The City of Green River requested $8,966 for swim lessons and $19,680 to help cover Summer Day Camps. The Green River Grapplers requested $5,000 for summer wrestling camps, and the Miracle League of Sweetwater County requested $3,260 to help cover costs of uniforms, equipment, and insurance.

The Rec Board also has earmarked $50,000 for an ongoing Riverside Park playground project.

At the start of the meeting, the board heard an update from Katie Harder on projections for the Fiscal Year 2025 budget. Harder estimated about $1.3 million in revenue for Fiscal Year 2025. After factoring in recurring expenditures, about $421,000 was available, and the district and community recreation requests came out to about $413,000. Harder also estimated about $1.6 million in undesignated reserves.
