Green River hosted the 4A West Regional Basketball Tournament starting last Thursday. The Lady Wolves were seeded second in the 4A Southwest Region going into the tournament. Star Valley was seeded first, Evanston third and Jackson fourth.
The Lady Wolves played their first game on Thursday against the Kelly Walsh Lady Trojans. Green River hit the court with a lot of intensity and good defense, but couldn't keep the opposing team off the offensive glass. The Lady Wolves struggled with getting into foul trouble and having a hard time getting the ball in the basket. After fighting for their first win, Green River lost the game with a final score of 40-54.
Isabel Vasco led the team with 23 points, six rebounds and three steals, along with Addison Demaret with seven points, eight rebounds and three blocks. Freshman Nicole Wilson also had eight points and five rebounds.
"I thought we were extremely competitive," said Head Coach Rick Carroll. "We ended up losing the game even though I thought we played pretty well."
On Friday, the Lady Wolves took on the Jackson Hole Lady Broncs. The Lady Wolves played very consistently throughout the game and averaged 15 points a quarter. Green River did a great job of playing defense and kept Jackson from scoring. It was a victorious win for Green River with a final score of 61-15. With that loss, the Lady Broncs were eliminated.
Demaret led the Lady Wolves with 15 points, eight rebounds and seven blocks, along with Vasco with nine points, eight rebounds and five steals. Sophomore Sydnie Eastman also had ten rebounds and five steals.
"I think we were relaxed and the girls felt comfortable," explained Coach Carroll. "We didn't shoot the ball very well but we got our own offensive rebounds and got multiple opportunities to score."
On the last day of the tournament, the Lady Wolves played against the Rock Springs Lady Tigers. If they won the game, they would grab their spot to compete in the State Tournament.
It was a very close game in the first and second quarter, with Rock Springs having a one-point lead. During the third quarter, Rock Springs pulled ahead by five points, and Green River was unable to make up the difference in the fourth quarter. Green River lost the game with a final score of 34-40. The Lady Wolves were eliminated and the Lady Tigers qualified for State.
Vasco led the team with 18 points, four rebounds and three steals, along with Eastman with five rebounds and two steals.
After the completion of the Regional Tournament, the Cody Fillies won the championship round while the Star Valley Lady Braves took second. The Rock Springs Lady Tigers took third place while the Kelly Walsh Lady Trojans took fourth. All four teams will represent the 4A West Region in the State Tournament that takes place March 7 - 9 in Casper.
Coach Carroll wants the girls to know how much the coaching staff appreciates all of the team's hard work and the time they put in on the court. He would also like to thank the parents who support and help their kids as well as the community for all of their support for the extracurricular activities of Green River High School. Coach Carrol thanks Madison Moffatt and Brianna Strauss, his seniors that were able to play this year, because they did a great job. There were two seniors that were injured and unable to play this year, Ella Stanton and Jayla Braden.
"Our hearts went out to them," said Coach Carroll. "They spent so much time making themselves really good athletes, but specifically they spent a great deal of time making themselves really good basketball players. We love these girls."
