Lady Wolves fall to Star Valley Braves

The Lady Wolves Basketball team played their third conference game against the Star Valley Braves in Afton on Saturday.

Green River ended the first quarter behind Star Valley with a score of 4-8. It had been a low-scoring game so far and Green River was struggling getting some shots in the basket while Star Valley got some points from free throw shots. In the second quarter, Green River came out stronger, but so did Star Valley. Green River outscored Star Valley with 12 points to Star Valley's 11 points. The Braves kept the lead heading into half-time.

During the third quarter, Star Valley outscored Green River, scoring 15 points to Green River's nine. Green River was turning over the ball and making fouls, which helped Star Valley gain even more momentum. The Braves sunk a lot of their free throw shots and it ultimately hurt the Lady Wolves. During the last quarter, Star Valley made another 24 points to Green River's 18 points, and the game ended with Green River falling to Star Valley with a final score of 43-58.

Nicole Wilson led the Wolves with 10 points, along with Brianna Strauss with three three-point shots and Madison Moffatt with eight points. Addison Demaret and Moffatt each had nine rebounds, along with Demaret with six assists and two blocks.

"I think it was a real struggle for us," said Head Coach Rick Carroll. "I think we were a bit sluggish and we were playing kind of slow."

Coach Carroll said the team has been dealing with some illness and he believes that they didn't have the intensity that they normally play with. He said they were also shooting poorly and turning the ball over a lot and that ultimately cost them the game.

"This week we're really emphasizing taking care of the basketball, cleaning up what we need to, and then we've got to do a better job on the glass," he explained. "We just have to have a better team effort all the way around."

Coach Carroll thought that Star Valley played very well and they are a strong team this year, winning six out of seven games. He said they deserve a lot of credit because they came out on the court with a lot of confidence and played strong.

Green River has improvements that need to be made on their offensive execution, but they are still ranked number one in the state for team rebounding, averaging 37.7 rebounds. They are seventh in the state for team scoring, eighth for team shooting and tenth for team defense.

The Lady Wolves are playing a game against the Lady Tigers in Rock Springs today at 5:30. On Saturday, they will travel to Casper to play the Kelly Walsh Trojans.
