Wrestlers take top spots in Vernal Tournament of Champions

The Green River Wolves Boys and Girls Wrestling teams, both Varsity and Junior Varsity, competed this past week on Friday and Saturday in one of the long-running, prestigious regional wrestling meets in this area. The 52nd Annual Tournament of Champions in Vernal, Utah had teams from Utah, Colorado and Wyoming.

The Varsity boys team finished fifth out of 34 teams and had six of their 16 wrestlers place in the top eight. The top finisher in the tourney for the boys was James Herwaldt, who took second at 165 pounds. Maddux Hintz finished fourth at 150 pounds. Four wrestlers finished in fifth place in their weight classes, with Jaydon Walther at 157 pounds, Nick Weipert at 150 pounds, Lucas Todd at 113 pounds, and Bentley Johnson at 106 pounds. Axel Mackinnon took sixth at 132 pounds. Finally, Tavin Vendetti finished in eighth place in the 106 pound weight class.

There were 18 teams in the Girls Division, with Green River being the top local team, finishing in 10th place. The girls had six wrestlers participate, with four placing in the top five. Lily Harris took second place in the 125 pound weight class along with Brianna Uhrig and Mikayla Green taking fourth place while Bianca Maez took fifth.

The J.V. Boys competed against 31 other teams, taking third place overall with 17 wrestlers participating for the Wolves. Those placing in the top eight for the boys were Declan Henderson finishing first in the 175 pound weight class, Weston Green finishing second at 120 pounds, and Alexander Hudson taking third place in the 190 pound weight class.

Next up for the Wolves Wrestling teams will be the hosting of the Thoman Tournament at Green River High School, another large prestigious regional tournament with schools from Utah, Idaho, Colorado and Wyoming. The tournament will take place this Friday, January 12 and Saturday, January 13. With a record number of teams, it should be an outstanding tournament.
