Wolves make improvements, get win in Cheyenne

The Green River High School Boys Basketball team started the new year off with some tough competition at the James Johnson Winter Showcase in Cheyenne last weekend.

"It was good to be back in action following several practices over Christmas break," Head Coach Laurie Ivie said.

The Wolves took on three teams over the course of the three-day tournament, facing Sheridan, Cheyenne Central, and Cheyenne South. Green River came away with losses in their first two games but an exciting win to end the weekend.

The tournament started with the game against Sheridan on Thursday. Green River fought hard but ended up falling to Sheridan 65-51. Theran Archibald led the Wolves, scoring 22 points and getting three rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Chris Wilson and Hunter Lake contributed nine points each. Lake also had three rebounds, and both he and Wilson had two assists and two steals. Daxton Taylor helped out with six rebounds, while Adrian Ruiz had four rebounds.

On Friday the Wolves took on Cheyenne Central, the undefeated #1 team in the 4A Southeast quadrant. Green River lost the game 68-33. This time Wilson led the team for scoring, getting 14 points in the game, as well as five rebounds and one assist. Ruiz and Archibald each had two steals, and Ruiz and Taylor both contributed three rebounds.

"We didn't look to push the ball in transition during the Sheridan and Central game, and had way too many turnovers," Coach Ivie explained of the losses. "We made improvements in all of those areas in our game Saturday against Cheyenne South."

Not only did they make improvements during the game, but the Wolves also pulled ahead to beat Cheyenne South 76 to 41. Wilson and Archibald led the team together, scoring 25 points and 24 points respectively, as well as getting four rebounds each. Archibald also had five steals, while Wilson had two. AJ Keelin led the team in rebounds, contributing nine, while Taylor and Ruiz also helped with seven and six rebounds respectively.

"Our focus continues to be on the defensive end of the court and rebounding," Coach Ivie said. "However, we have added offensive efficiency to that list as well."

The Wolves will have a break this weekend and play again next week when they host Evanston on Thursday and head to Jackson Hole on Saturday.
