Lady Wolves compete at James Johnson Winter Showcase

The Lady Wolves Basketball team recently traveled to compete in the James Johnson Winter Showcase in Cheyenne. Green River lost their first three games on Thursday and Friday, but ended the tournament with a win on Saturday. The Lady Wolves have had to work very hard this season to overcome obstacles thrown at them. They have had several key players that are unable to play, and it has put a lot of pressure on the team.

On Thursday, Green River played against Sheridan. During the first quarter, the Lady Wolves had a good start, ending with Green River trailing 11-12. In the next three quarters, Green River fell further behind and couldn't catch up to Sheridan. There were mistakes on the court that cost them the game, and they lost 33-60. Brianna Strauss led the team with 13 points during the game, four three-point shots and four steals. Addison Demaret also led the team with eight rebounds, two three-point shots and four assists.

On Friday, Green River played their first fast-paced game against Wheatland. Although the scoreboard stayed pretty close throughout the game, Green River trailed Wheatland and lost the game 42-51. Demaret led the team with 11 points, three three-point shots and nine rebounds. Strauss had five steals and three assists during the game, along with Sophia Arnold with six rebounds and four free throw shots.

Green River played their second game against Cheyenne East. It was a rough start to the game when the Lady Wolves fell behind in the first quarter. Green River's momentum picked up, but they weren't able to pull ahead of the aggressive Thunderbirds. The Lady Wolves ended up losing the game 30-54. Madison Moffat led the team with six free throw shots and two baskets, along with Arnold with 10 points and Demaret with nine rebounds and five assists.

On Saturday, the team played their final game against Cheyenne South. Green River hit the court strong, taking the lead in the first quarter and keeping the lead throughout the game. It was a victorious win for the Lady Wolves with a final score of 41-14.

Demaret led the team with 11 points, three three-point shots and 10 rebounds. Nicole Wilson had four assists and three steals, along with Strauss with two three-point shots and three steals.

Head Coach Rick Carroll said there were a couple things that stood out during the games that they really need to work on. The girls need to work on doing a better job of rebounding the ball. He said they gave up a lot of offensive rebounds that allowed their opponents to make some easy baskets that ended up hurting them. They will also be working on cleaning up the way they run offense, because Coach Carroll feels they had too many turnovers during the tournament. He said it is important that they make these adjustments because they will be starting their conference games, which are very important games for them.

The Lady Wolves are traveling on Saturday to take on Cheyenne Central at 1 p.m. Next Thursday, they will host their first conference game against the Evanston Red Devils at 6 p.m. Make sure to come and support the Lady Wolves!
