Lady Wolves earn two wins at Oil City Tip-off tournament in Casper

The Green River Lady Wolves basketball team played their first game of the season as they took on Cheyenne South at the Oil City Tip-off Tournament in Casper last Thursday. Green River tore up the court and claimed their first win with a final score of 74-44.

The players that make up the Varsity team are Brianna Strauss, Ella Stanton, Madison Moffat, Eva Murray, Addison Demaret, McKinley Killpack, Isabel Vasco, Nicole Wilson, Sophia Arnold, Sydnie Eastman, Izzy Kelley and Maci Hernandez.

Stanton led the team with 20 points and 13 rebounds along with Demaret with four assists and Strauss with three three-point shots.

On Friday, Green River played their next game against Natrona County. It was another glorious win for the Lady Wolves, who ended the game with a final score of 54-42. Moffat led the team with 12 points along with Demaret with 16 rebounds and Vasco with three assists. Strauss, Demaret and Killpack all made three-point shots. During the game, Stanton got injured and was unable to play the rest of the game.

On Saturday, the tournament didn’t end the way the Lady Wolves had hoped for. Green River played Laramie and fought for the win, but unfortunately they ended up losing the game with a final score of 51-87. Arnold led the team with 12 points along with Demaret with nine rebounds and Vasco with four assists. Strauss and Demaret both made two three-point shots along with Vasco making one.

Head Coach Rick Carroll thinks the girls played pretty well in the tournament with good intensity. Offensively they moved the ball really well and played with great teamwork.

“We actually, at this point, are the leading scorer team in the state,” he added.

During the games against Cheyenne South and Natrona County, they played great offensively and defensively. After Stanton got hurt against Natrona, the girls had to work really hard to keep them from making a comeback and they played very tough defense. Unfortunately during the game against Laramie, Coach Carroll feels they played some girls longer than they should have and didn’t get everybody on the court as much as they needed to, so that kind of hurt them.

“Defensively we kind of broke down and we didn’t have the intensity that we needed to play with. We hurt ourselves on defense and we need to figure out how to pick that up so that we don’t have lapses like that again. That’s the biggest thing,” explained Coach Carroll.

The Lady Wolves are very excited about hosting the Flaming Gorge Classic that begins today and continues through Saturday. Coach Carroll says it will be a great weekend of basketball with a lot of really good teams competing. The teams that Green River will be playing are good teams and Carroll said they need to play stronger defensively than they did, or they will have some troubles and struggles to win. He feels that offensively they are doing really well and will continue improving all-around and making the needed adjustments to win games.

Green River plays Mountain View today at 6 p.m., Thunder Basin on Friday at 4:20 p.m. and Pinedale on Saturday at 6 p.m. All of their games will be in the main gym at the Green River High School. Come and support the Lady Wolves!
