GRHS Cross Country finishes season at State Tournament

Although they ran hard, the Green River High School Cross Country team came up just a little shy of the trophy they were hoping for at the State Tournament.

The girls team pushed for a victory, but with over a dozen other teams to face and tough competition fighting for the win, the Lady Wolves ended up coming in fifth overall. They were only two points away from fourth place, being barely beat out by Buffalo High School. The Evanston ladies, who have been tough competition for the Lady Wolves all season, came in third, with Cody in second and Powell taking the Championship title.

"I think they were a little disappointed, but they were pretty proud of themselves that they did that well," Head Coach Craig Leavitt said of the girls team.

The Lady Wolves had two team members finish in the top 20 out of a field of almost 100 runners. Isabelle Murdock led the team as she has throughout the season, only missing out on the top 10 by two seconds and coming in 11th place. Her sister Madison was close behind her once again, finishing in 15th place. Ellie Quiroz came in 27th place, Lily Murdock took 34th, and Makynzee Bagshaw rounded out the top five runners in 57th. Bagshaw ran one of her fastest times after coming back from being out for most of the season due to an injury.

While the girls had hoped for a better finish, the majority of them still have time to earn a trophy in the future.

"It's still a pretty young team," Coach Leavitt said, pointing out the top five runners included a freshman and a first-year runner.

The boys team has also been a young team this year, but they're just getting started.

"They know what State looks like now," Leavitt said of the boys. "Next year I think they'll know what to expect, and they got a good experience in."

Looking forward to the next year, Coach Leavitt knows the entire team has some work to do.

"We jump to 4A next year," he explained. "So hopefully they're going to step up their game."

Still, Coach Leavitt is proud of the team's efforts this year.

"I think it went pretty good," he said of the season. "I feel like they tried their best and were pretty successful."
