Dear Editor,
I have given up on walking on the Green Belt because of the number of unleashed dogs that are allowed to run free as long as they’re in control of their owners voice.
I am afraid one of these “controlled “ dogs could attack me or my elder dog. My thoughts on the matter have been dismissed by Animal Control, the City Council, and the Mayor.
So, I began walking on the sidewalks in my neighborhood and am finding them in terrible shape. The route I took was from Lincoln school to Smiths, then to Veterans Park and back. A majority of the sidewalks are cracked and crumbling, some rising 3-4 inches from one side of the sidewalk to the other. They are covered in debris and dirt still from last winter.
We also use a stroller to push our elder dog and found there are very few intersections that are ramped (ADA compliant) to allow small wheeled things on and off the sidewalk safely. I would guess there were maybe 1 out of every 4 intersections were ramped.
I was appalled at the shape of our sidewalks. I can’t believe we expect our kids, citizens, and the elderly to negotiate these hazards. Does anyone ever inspect the cities sidewalks and schedule them for repair? At the very least, they could be cleaned or swept once a year.
This has been my lifelong home for 61 years and I think Green River can do better.
