GRHS Golf swings into fall season

The Green River High School Golf team has already started the fall season and seen impressive accomplishments in their first tournament.

The season officially started Monday, August 7 with a varsity qualifying round. Competition kicked off with the Star Valley Invitational August 9 and 10. GRHS was able to bring a girls varsity team, a boys varsity team and a boys junior varsity squad to the tournament.

The Lady Wolves had a successful tournament, especially the trio of Senior Isabell Salas, Sophomore Mylie Mele and Junior Taylor Jenny, who had an "impressive team performance," according to Assistant Coach Danielle Salas. The girls took home third place honors, only missing second place by four strokes. Mele saw an eight-stroke improvement while Jenny stayed consistent throughout the competition. Salas was the overall champion, shooting one under par 69 on day one and an even par 70 on day two for a two-day total of 139. She led the girls' field, winning by a record 30 strokes.

"We are so proud of the work these ladies put in over the summer," the GRHS Golf Facebook page posted after the first day of competition. "Their hard work is definitely paying off!"

The boys on the team didn't have as much success at the tournament, but still put in a lot of work.

"Our boys unfortunately didn't place, however, many of them improved from day one to day two," Coach Salas said. "Junior Kaleb Gunter was our top performer on the boys' side, coming in with rounds of 85 and 83."

The boys had 10 competitors, including some of the newest members of the team.

"We are proud of all our new members as they all exceeded our expectations and we look forward to seeing them grow and continue to improve," the GRHS Golf page posted.

The Wolves will tee off at the Evanston invitational today and tomorrow.
