After being the subject of much discussion during the last City Council meeting, the open container permit and catering permit for an event by Badass Brews and the Buck N Bar were approved during Tuesday night’s meeting.
The city council raised questions about the permits, which were for an event originally called “Too Broke for Sturgis,” at the July 18 meeting. There were concerns about issues including the size of the event, security measures and street blockades. Councilmember Gary Killpack also voiced his opposition to the name of the event and the desire to have anything like Sturgis in Green River.
At this week’s council meeting, the permits were presented to the council again with changes made, including changing the name from “Too Broke for Sturgis” to “The Buck N Badass Rally.”
Russ Hemmert, owner of Badass Brews, explained the group who originally approached the businesses about doing the event was the one to change the name after realizing there was an event in Vernal, Utah the same weekend that was also called “Too Broke for Sturgis.”
Hemmert also explained some of the other changes and updates to event plans, including having security, having a check-in where everyone over 21 years old is banded so adults and minors are differentiated, and having branded cups for alcohol. He also noted that lots of the bikers who will be there are “big boys,” so he doesn’t anticipate having problems with things getting out of hand.
“Our goal here is not to step on anybody’s toes or anything else,” Hemmert said of the event.
The rally will be hosted within a barricaded area on N 1st E Street from Flaming Gorge Way to Railroad Avenue, including the sidewalk in front of the Buck N Bar, the side alley and the alley in the back of the Buck N Bar.
The open container permit applies to both days of the event, which Hemmert said was just so participants could enjoy their drinks outside. The catering permit for the Buck N Bar is only for the second day, which Hemmert explained is because the first day will mostly be a poker run, while the second day will have more activities.
Hemmert also noted that the event will raise funds for a good cause.
“We’re actually donating all the proceeds to a single mother in the community who had been diagnosed with a disease and we want to help her out,” he explained. “As a biker community, that’s what we do.”
Biker communities are a close-knit family, according to Hemmert, and events like this are about coming together, supporting each other and helping people.
Councilmember Killpack recognized and thanked Hemmert for the changes to the event and the permit.
“The way it was a couple weeks ago I couldn’t support it,” Killpack said. “Because of the way that you have made that change, I can support that completely.”
“Hopefully this will be the first annual and we can do this every year,” Hemmert said.
The open container permit for Badass Brews and the catering permit for the Buck N Bar were both approved unanimously.
The Buck N Badass Rally will take place from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday, August 5 and 6.
