Green River Knights show up to compete but lose winning streak

After a promising winning streak, the Green River Knights traveled to play a double-header against the Jackson Giants on June 5. The Giants are one of the best teams in the state this year.

During the first game, there were no runs scored in the first inning and the Giants scored one run in the second inning. The Giants scored two runs in the third inning and continued to score eight runs in the fourth inning. Green River struggled to get runs and was unable to score as they fell to the Giants with a final score of 0-11.

During the second game of the day, the Knights couldn't get ahead of the Giants. The Giants scored five runs in the first two innings while the Knights scored one run in the second inning. With the Knights trailing Jackson, Green River and Jackson both scored two runs in the third inning. In the fourth inning, Green River was dominated by Jackson, with the Giants scoring six runs and Green River unable to score again. The Knights fell to the Giants again with a final score of 3-18. Leading the team were Q Liebelt, Chris Reinig and Jace Paoli with one run each.

Head Coach Ben Lail says the boys really competed, especially playing against one of the best Double-A teams.

On Saturday, the Knights traveled to play against the Torrington Tigers at the Dean Bullock Memorial Tournament in Torrington. The Tigers came out strong, scoring three runs in the first inning while Green River was unable to get on the scoreboard. The second inning, Green River scored one run and held Torrington from scoring. During the third inning, Torrington scored one run and held Green River from scoring. There were no runs during the fourth inning, and in the fifth inning Torrington scored three more runs to Green River's one run. The Knights lost the game with final score of 3-7. Leading the team were Chris Reinig, Skyler Lee and Jace Paoli with one run each.

Coach Lail said the weather was terrible but the boys played hard and the pitchers did really well. Ashton Eldredge and Brackin Lail pitched fantastic and really carried the team.

The Knights played another tournament game on Saturday against the Fort Morgan Mustangs. The Mustangs scored one run in the first inning while the Knights didn't get on the board. It was a tight second inning, with neither team scoring points. The Knights had plenty of hits during the game but were unable to bring any of the boys home while the Mustangs scored two runs in the third and fourth innings and three runs in the fifth. The Knights walked away with a loss to the Mustangs, the final score 0-8.

"We played very well," said Coach Lail. "They just had our number that day."

The Knights will travel to Powell this weekend to play four games and compete in the Father's Day Tournament. There will be lots of great competition attending and Coach Lail said it should be lots of fun.
