Track and Field athletes are among the best in the state

This past week, the Green River High School Girls and Boys Track and Field teams traveled to Evanston High School on Wednesday to compete with Southwest Wyoming local schools. Participating schools included host school Evanston as well as Rock Springs, Mountain View, Star Valley, Lyman, Kemmerer and Farson-Eden. The temperature and the wind were somewhat better than the other meets so far this season.

Later in the week, for the first time in five years, the Wyoming Classic Track Meet returned. The event took place Friday in Casper at Kelly Walsh High School. This meet hosts the top performers in the state in all classes, inviting the top nine performers in the field events and top eight in the running events. The athletes can only compete in two events. Green River qualified three athletes, with Christopher Wilson and Kyler Bartlett for the boys and Lillian Allison for the girls.

Allison competed in the Shot Put, where the sophomore set a personal record with a throw of 39-04.00 to take fourth place among the best in the state. Wilson, who was among the top four in the state in four events, chose to compete in the Long Jump and the 300 Hurdles. Wilson took second in the long jump with a fine jump of 22-03.75 and won the 300 Intermediate Hurdles in 39.39, setting a personal best.

Last Saturday, April 29, the entire boys and girls team traveled to Casper to compete with eight other schools in the Kelly Walsh Invitational. Finally having the benefit of some warm weather which allowed the team to get in some outside practices resulted in a lot of personal records for the season.

Those finishing in the top eight and scoring team points for the boys included Christopher Wilson, who had another outstanding meet, taking first in the 300 Hurdles and the Triple Jump and taking second in the 110 hurdles. Two sophomore pole vaulters, Christian Oswald and Trace Erdman, cleared 12-0 for the first time in their careers to finish fifth and seventh respectively. Dillon Davis also took eighth in the shot put.

For the girls, Madison Murdock took third in the 300 Meter Hurdles, Mikayla Dockter was eighth in the Pole Vault, and Lillian Allison was second in the discus and third in the shot put.

"We had several PRs on both Friday and Saturday, which is helping us to move up in the standings," Head Coach Dan Hansen said. "The team has continued to work hard and it has shown in their performances."

Today the team will be traveling to Cody for their "Trackstravaganza," which will be the final regular season track and field meet before going back to Cody the following week for regionals May 12 and 13.
