The Green River High School Boys and Girls Track and Field teams caught a break in the weather this past Saturday, April 1, to travel a short distance south to Vernal, Utah for the 2023 Uintah Invitational Track meet.
The meet was hosted by Uintah High School on their home track. There were five teams from Southwest Wyoming, along with seven teams from Northern Utah. The teams were prepared for the wind, snow and cold, but were surprised by the abundance of sunshine and good conditions for the meet.
The boys team finished third overall and the girls team was fifth. The boys and girls combined finished fourth out of the 12 teams.
In the field events for the Lady Wolves, Lillian Allison was the top performer with a first-place performance in the Shot Put, throwing 37-7, and a second-place finish in the Discus. Also for the girls, Madison Murdock had a fine race in the 300 Meter Hurdles as she finished in second place in 50.79. Autumn Casey came in third in the High Jump at 4-8. Another top individual performance was the third-place finish in the 3,200 Meter Run and fourth-place finish in the 1600 Meter Run for distance runner Isabelle Murdock.
For the boys on the track, Christopher Wilson took first place with an excellent early-season leap of 21-5.25 in the Long Jump, as well as finishing second in both the 110 Meter Hurdles and the 300 Meter Hurdles. In field events, top performances came from Kyler Bartlett, who took first in the shot put, and Dillon Davis, who was third. Brayden Lennon also had a good day with a fourth-place finish in the Long Jump with a leap of 19-1, as well as a sixth-place finish in the 110 Meter Hurdles.
Head Track Coach Dan Hansen was very pleased with both the individual top performers and the team as a whole. Many team members scored their Personal Records of the season. This meet was also the first time this season that the team was at full strength, since a number of competitors had just finished their participation in winter sports or come back from spring break. Hansen thought the team showed really well for early in the season, and he sees a lot of promise for the athletes as they gain experience as the season progresses.
The team’s next scheduled meet is the Okie Invite in Cheyenne starting today, weather permitting.
