Lady Wolves finish State with two hard losses

The Lady Wolves competed in the 4A State Championships in Casper last week. The first game they played on Thursday was against the Sheridan Broncs. Green River had played Sheridan earlier in the season and had lost by 40 points. It was very important for the Lady Wolves to start the game aggressively if they wanted to beat them. Starting the first quarter, Green River was using 2-3 zone defense, which was slowing Sheridan down and keeping the scoreboard tight, so Green River scored 11 points to Sheridan's 15.

The Lady Wolves started struggling with not completing their passes and their shooting was off. The second quarter, Head Coach Rick Carroll took a time out to talk with the girls. He felt the girls started out too nervous and hesitant. Green River was having a tough time sinking the ball and went into half-time with 22 points to Sheridan's 31.

Starting the third quarter, the Wolves were playing good offensive moves, but they couldn't match Sheridan's very strong defense. Green River ended the third quarter trailing Sheridan 31-38. The Lady Wolves were using full-court pressure and looking to score more points the last quarter. Sheridan played tough man-defense and kept Green River's opportunities to score at a minimum the last couple minutes of the game. The Lady Wolves couldn't make up the difference and lost the game 39-51.

"I'm very proud of the way we played," said Coach Carroll. "I thought the girls showed a tremendous amount of effort and hard work, it just wasn't quite enough to get us the win."

Leading the team was Ella Stanton with 15 points and Isabel Vasco with 14 points, along with Addison Demaret with nine rebounds and Brianna Strauss with three assists.

With one loss, the Lady Wolves played in the consolation bracket against the Kelly Walsh Trojans on Friday. Coach Carroll felt the team started out extremely flat and the girls didn't communicate enough on defense at the beginning of the game. In the first quarter, Green River scored 10 points to Kelly Walsh's 23. In the second quarter, Green River still struggled to catch up, scoring eight points to Kelly Walsh's 12 points. After halftime, the Lady Wolves were more focused and scored 13 points. Green River tried to make a comeback and kept Kelly Walsh to six points in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Green River scored another 16 points, but it wasn't enough to get them the lead. The Lady Wolves fell to the Trojans with a final score of 47-52 and were eliminated from the championships.

"I felt like we just weren't playing with enough intensity and energy the first quarter," explained Coach Carroll. "In the second half, we totally turned it around but we put ourselves in such a big hole we couldn't come back."

Leading the team was Ella Stanton with 15 points and eight rebounds, along with Jayla Braden with 10 points and Isabel Vasco with three steals.

Ending the season, Coach Carroll is extremely proud of the Lady Wolves on all levels. He feels they showed tremendous strides in how they played as a team and their individual growth.

"It's a statement of their work ethic and how hard they are willing to try," said Coach Carroll. "As a coaching staff, we felt like we had a great group throughout the year to work with and we're extremely proud of the effort and time they put in."

Coach Carroll would like to thank the parents and the fans for their time and their positive influence throughout the season.

"We're just really happy to be involved with this particular sport in the Green River High School," added Coach Carroll.

The 4A West Region All-Conference awards were awarded to the first team players Ella Stanton and Jayla Braden, and the second team awards went to Addison Demaret and Isabel Vasco. The All-State honors were awarded to first team player Jayla Braden and second team Ella Stanton.
