Lady Wolves win two more conference games

The Lady Wolves basketball team has been tearing up the court. They have won two more conference games, putting them in great positioning for Regionals.

Green River hosted an intense game against the Evanston Red Devils last Thursday. It was a battle. In the first quarter, Evanston was doing a great job on the boards and was out-rebounding Green River, taking the lead 17-11. During the second quarter, Green River battled back, bringing the score board closer and only trailing Evanston by one point. The Lady Wolves came out on the court in the third quarter ready to play.

"We made a basket, got a couple of turnovers, made a couple easy ones and then kind of relaxed and hit a three pointer," said Head Coach Rick Carroll. "Within a minute and a half we were up 10 points."

The rest of the third quarter, Green River played great defense and offense, keeping the lead and scoring 22 points to Evanston's seven. The fourth quarter was a tough one, with both teams scoring nine points. Coach Carroll explained that sometimes in basketball "one run makes a difference" in whether you win the game or lose the game. The Lady Wolves left the court beating Evanston 52-38. Leading the team was Ella Stanton with 18 points, along with Addison Demaret with eight rebounds and Jayla Braden with ten assists and four steals.

On Saturday, the Lady Wolves traveled to Jackson to play the Broncs. Jackson has been struggling this year with a shortage of experienced girls. Green River played very well in the first two quarters and dominated the score board. In the first quarter, Green River scored 22 points to Jackson's two. During the seconds quarter, Green River scored 21 points to Jackson's four. With a huge lead, Coach Carroll made sure everyone on the team had some time on the court. Green River played great offense and defense and won the game with a final score of 53-16. Leading the team was Addison Demaret with 14 points, along with Ella Stanton with 14 rebounds and Jayla Braden with nine assists. Braden and Stanton each had five steals.

The Lady Wolves are preparing for their last conference game against Star Valley, which Coach Carroll says "is a really big conference game." If Green River wins, they will be outright first in their quad at regionals, but if they lose they tie for placement with Star Valley.

"It's the flip of a coin, so we would rather dictate what we are doing next week by winning this basketball game, so it becomes a big game," added Coach Carroll.

Green River will travel to play a game against the Rock Springs Tigers today and will travel to Star Valley on Friday to take on the Braves. Next week, Thursday March 2 through Saturday March 4, the Lady Wolves will compete in the 4A West Regional Tournament in Star Valley. The tournament will include Cody, Kelly Walsh, Riverton, Rock Springs, Evanston, Green River, Jackson and Star Valley.
