The new Wyoming State Girls Wrestling program continues to progress as this week the Green River High School Girls Wrestling team traveled to the Bridger Valley to compete with fourteen other Wyoming high schools' girls wrestling teams in the first Lyman Girls Invitational Wrestling Tournament.
The Lady Wolves came away from the competition placing third overall.
In the 100 pound weight class there were only two wrestlers entered, and Jayleigh Wright lost by fall to her opponent from Pinedale. At 110 pounds, Green River's Brianna Uhrig won two of her matches by fall (pinning her opponent) and won her third match by decision 7-4 to take first place in her weight class.
At 120 pounds, the Lady Wolves' Zella Maez pinned all three of her opponents to also take first place in her weight class. At 125 pounds, Green River's Lily Harris had a bye in the first round, then won her next two matches by fall before losing her last match by a fall to finish in second place. Mikayla Green at 130 pounds won one match and lost two to finish third. And at 135 - 140 pounds, Green River's Kylee Miller took fifth, winning two matches and losing two.
So in the end, Green Rivers' Lady Wolves wrestling had two Champions in Uhrig and Maez.
Head Wrestling Coach Josh Wisniewski commented that "the girls just keep getting better and better each week. Excited that they have an opportunity to have a State Tournament to wrestle in."
The coach went on to say that he is looking forward to seeing how they compete in the State Tournament.
The State Championships for the girls will be today and tomorrow, Feb. 23 and 24, at the Wyoming Ford Center in Casper, coinciding with the State Championships for the boys at the Ford Center on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 24 and 25.
