Lady Wolves take Riverton, lose to undefeated Cody

It was another fun-filled weekend of basketball for the Lady Wolves.

They traveled to Riverton on Friday to play the Wolverines. The ladies started out a little slow, missing some easy baskets, but they were able to steal the ball back and score some points, ending the first quarter with 15 points to Riverton's 10. The next two quarters, Green River out-scored Riverton 14-4. The last quarter of the game, Riverton tried catching up, scoring 13 points to Green River's 12, but it was too late in the game and the Lady Wolves won 55-31.

Head Coach Rick Carroll thinks the girls were very consistent in their offense and that they did pretty good on defense. During the game, Green River's edge was rebounding, and all the girls contributed to their success.

Leading the team was Isabel Vasco with 15 points, Madison Moffat with 11 and Ella Stanton with 10. Leading rebounds was Stanton with 14, along with Addison Demaret with eight. Jayla Braden had eight assists and five steals during the game.

On Saturday, Green River left Riverton and traveled to Cody to play the undefeated Cody Broncs. Coach Carroll mentioned that Cody is a very good team, but for the most part they really haven't been tested this year.

"They're fast, they're big and they are really experienced," said Carroll. He thinks the girls let their nerves get the best of them. Starting the first quarter, they turned the ball over a bunch. Cody scored 18 points in the first quarter and Green River scored eight. The second quarter, Cody out-scored Green River again, 27-16.

"We put ourselves in a hole," explained Carroll. "I think that hole put us in a situation where we were rushing too much and not seeing the floor as good as we needed to."

The third quarter, the Lady Wolves fell further behind, scoring nine points to Cody's 19. Green River lost control of the fourth quarter with a tighter score, scoring 10 to Cody's 14. The Lady Wolves put up a fight but couldn't match Cody's intensity and fell to the Broncs 43-78.

Carrol feels the girls have the ability to play a lot better than they did against Cody. They need to focus on two things going forward: taking better care of the ball and communicating as a team when they play so their defense improves.

Leading the team was Ella Stanton with 11 points and Jayla Braden with nine, along with Stanton and Addison Demaret with seven rebounds each. Jayla Braden had six assists and three steals during the game.

There are more conference games to come as teams try to position themselves before regionals.

Green River is playing a conference game today against the Evanston Red Devils at 6 p.m. in the main gym. The senior players will also be honored during the game. Then the Lady Wolves will travel to Jackson to hit the court with the Jackson Hole Broncs on Saturday for another conference game.
