Lady Wolves win Cheyenne South

The Green River Lady Wolves competed in the James Johnson Winter Classic in Laramie and Cheyenne last Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The Lady Wolves played in Laramie on Thursday against the Lady Plainsman. They started out slow but ended up playing better as the game went on, only losing to Laramie by seven points.

"We gave up the lead, didn't rebound and got in too big of a hurry on offense," said Coach Rick Carroll. He felt this ultimately ended up hurting the team.

Jayla Braden and Brianna Strauss led the team with nine points each, along with Addison Demaret with 11 rebounds and Brianna Strauss with five assists.

On Friday, Green River played the Cheyenne South Bison and controlled the game for all four quarters. Leading the team was Jayla Braden with 15 points, and Ella Stanton got 11 rebounds and three assists. Ella Stanton and Brianna Strauss also scored 13 points each and Madison Moffat scored 10. Cheyenne did have times where they were scoring and catching up but the girls settled down and moved away from them again.

"It would be nice to not let them get back into the game," said Carroll.

The Wolves kept the lead and ended the game with a well-deserved victory.

On Saturday, they faced the Sheridan Lady Broncs in Cheyenne. Ella Stanton led the team with 12 points and eight rebounds, along with Jayla Braden with two assists. Green River couldn't keep up with Sheridan's intensity and really struggled with scoring. They turned the ball over too many times and weren't able to get control of the ball back. Unfortunately, they ended up losing the game.

"Right now we are not playing very well as a defensive team," said Carroll.

Carroll explained that they will continue to work on shooting and working together on defense. He says he is seeing some good things individually but they need to work on helping each other out more and keeping track of what's going on in the game.

"It's kind of funny, we are one of the worst defensive teams in 4A right now but we're the best rebounding team," said Carroll. " We have to change that around and fix it."

Green River will be traveling to Gillette on Friday to play Thunder Basin.
