Wrestlers continue to grow

The Green River High School Wrestling team split and participated in two different tournaments this past week. Twenty-one varsity wrestlers were sent to compete in the very tough National Reno Tournament of Champions against 2,500 wrestlers from 30 different states. Other Wolves wrestlers, both boys and girls, competed in the local Joe Aimone Invitational wrestling Tournament in Kemmerer against 10 other Southwest Wyoming teams and one team each from Idaho and Utah. Both tournaments, according to Head Wrestling Coach Josh Wisniewski, were "great tournaments for our wrestlers to continue to grow and get better."

In Reno, the team placed 31st of 96 teams against some of the toughest high school programs generally from the Western parts of the United States. Coach Wisniewski felt the team competed "very well," winning lots of matches as well as losing a lot of close ones. Individually, Kale Knezovich was two matches out of placing in the tournament with a 4-2 record and Tommy Dalton was one match away from placing, also with a 4-2 record. The coach concluded: "It was good for our wrestlers to compete in this very challenging tournament to help them improve their skills on the mat."

At the Kemmerer tournament, the wrestlers did not keep team points, but the team wrestled well and continued to improve, according to Coach Wisniewski, with Green River having lots of wrestlers place.

The girls also competed in just their second tournament ever, finishing second in the category of most pins in the least amount of time, with eight pins in just 25.24. Jayleigh Wright and Lily Harris both placed first in their respective brackets, with Harris statistically being second overall in the tournament with most pins in the least amount of time.

Wisniewski commented that they are still not satisfied and they all want to get better every week, always looking to improve. He said the team will use the time off from the Christmas holidays to practice hard and improve.

After the new year, some of the team will head to Fresno, California to wrestle in another tough National Tournament, the Doc Buchanan Invitational. The other part of the team will travel to Vernal to wrestle in the very tough Tournament of Champions.
