Wolves Boys wrestlers place fourth, Girls get very first victory

The Green River Wrestling boys varsity and junior varsity and, for their first meet ever, the girls varsity team, traveled south this past weekend to Heber City, Utah, to participate in the Wasatch Intermountain Duels, one of the toughest Utah/Regional Meets.

Green River placed fourth among the 16 teams participating, and while the teams did not all compete against each other the Wolves finished with a dual record of 7-2 against some of Utah's best. Head Wrestling Coach for the Wolves, Josh Wisniewski, noted that "in wrestling we go after pins, which is very important in a team dual meet competition."

The coach felt that the team worked hard to score points and made other teams earn their points. In all, Coach Wisniewski felt they have a "very scrappy, gritty team that will only get better as the season progresses."

Two varsity wrestlers, Thomas Dalton and Spencer Wright, finished the tournament undefeated and received the Outstanding Undefeated Wrestling Award.

As for the younger, less experienced JV wrestlers, the coach indicated that a portion of the meet was a round robin bracketed tournament where the JVs wrestled well. Out of all the wrestlers in the tournament, the Wolves were fourth best in winning percentage and sixth best in pins. The coach was very happy with those stats and is looking forward to seeing the hard work the wrestlers are putting in resulting in improvement as the season progresses.

For the third group that represented Green River High, the coach commented that "the girls wrestled really well for their first ever tournament."

Coach Wisniewski went on to exclaim that there is "lots to work on and lots to improve on," but he indicated he is very happy and excited about their performance and potential. The coach further commented that "it was very neat to walk off the mat with Jayleigh Wright and be able to tell her that she got the first official victory for the GRHS Girls wrestling program."

The team has four girls who participated in the tournament, placing eighth out of 11 teams.

Coach Wisniewski concluded that overall as a team they wrestled well, but commented that "we as a team are not satisfied and we are going to work hard each and every week to improve."

This coming weekend the boys varsity team will travel to Reno, Nevada to wrestle in another very prestigious tournament, the Reno Tournament of Champions. The team is looking forward to the challenge.

The JV and varsity girls will be traveling to Kemmerer on Friday to wrestle in the Joe Aimone Invitational, and they are also looking forward to the challenge.
