Swimmers dive into new season

The Green River Wolves Boys Swimming and Diving team is diving into their new season with a lot of enthusiasm.

They have a great group of swimmers that are returning this year after finishing fourth at the 3A State Championships last year. The Wolves have a solid number of upperclassmen that will help the team move towards having a great season in the pool.

One of the strengths of the team this year is the number of seniors they have returning, and some seniors are joining the team for the first time. Six of the seniors are swimming for all four years of their high school career. The seniors are looked upon to keep the other swimmers and divers focused and on track.

"Some of the kids that are back again this year are a bit older and stronger than the younger kids just joining the team," said Head Coach Colleen Seiloff. "I think the seniors are going to do an awesome job leading the team this year."

The boys team has one junior this year and a huge group of sophomores that are back and working really hard.

"They are still a little bit inexperienced, but between now and the end of the season, I think we will see a lot of good improvement," Seiloff said.

They also have several new freshman that have joined the team.

Green River will have seven or eight divers this year.

"We've got a few that are trying diving and trying swimming and trying to decide whether they want to do both," explained Seiloff.

The team will focus on improving their technique for the different strokes during practices. During offseason, a lot of swimmers also participate in the SWAT swimming program. SWAT is a year round USA swimming team for students in Green River and Rock Springs.

"SWAT does a great job of developing swimmers that come into high school," said Seiloff.

The coach has high hopes for the team this season.

"I am looking for them to be in the top finishers at state this year," she said. "I think they can bring home a trophy this year, hopefully hit the top three. They have a good chance."

Coach Seiloff likes starting the season off with meets in Laramie, especially the Pentathlon. It allows her to see where everybody is at with their strokes and what events she can place them in for their second and third events. Competing helps the swimmers and divers to see in what areas they need to improve.

"I'm excited about the team this year. I'm looking forward to watching them have a great season. They're a great group and I love how hard they work," added Seiloff.

On Friday, December 9 the Wolves will travel to Laramie for their first meet. They will compete in the Laramie Relays on Friday and the Laramie Pentathlon on Saturday.
