Wolves eliminated from playoffs, Cuthbertson steps down

Head football Coach Kevin Cuthbertson stepped down this week after a 2-7 season in which they failed to make the playoffs. Cuthbertson met with his players Monday to let them know.

The Wolves’ final game of the season was a 44-7 loss against the Evanston Red Devils last Friday night, which eliminated Green River from the playoffs.

The Wolves received the ball to start the game and marched right down the field with three passes completed, one to Skyler Lee and two to Hunter Finley, including the touchdown pass. With the P.A.T. good the Wolves looked strong, taking a quick 7-0 lead.

Evanston mounted a drive of their own on their first possession, grinding out 13 plays with 12 runs and one incomplete pass to tie the game 7-7.

On their next series, the Wolves were stopped on three plays and punting into the wind. Evanston started their drive with a short field and got a big run from their quarterback to take a quick 14-7 lead. The Wolves once again were three plays and out and Evanston once again went to the run, opening big holes in the Wolves defense. Evanston took just six plays this possession, all of which were runs, to take the ball into the endzone and get an early 21-7 lead.

Things got even worse as the Wolves were once again stopped on three plays and Evanston, playing inspired football on their senior night, ran the ball for big gains before connecting on a short pass for another score. The Wolves broke through and blocked the P.A.T kick with Evanston up 27-7. The two teams exchanged drives without any more scoring and went into the locker rooms at the half with Evanston having a big early lead.

There was an extended halftime both for Senior night and a great supportive community event as there was a fundraiser cake sale for the two Powell Community College wrestlers, one from Evanston, that were mauled by a grizzly bear, wherein the Evanston native risked his life to save his teammate and probably saved his teammate’s life. The auction raised $2,754 to help defray medical expenses for the two wrestlers.

Evanston got the ball to start the second half and once again ran the ball but failed to score on their drive. Green River turned the ball over and four running plays later Evanston had scored again to increase their lead to 34-7.

Green River mounted a six-play drive but could not convert on fourth down and turned the ball back to Evanston despite a big pass completion to Lee and a big run by Connor Todd. Evanston kicked a 35-yard field goal at the start of the fourth quarter to up their lead to 37-7.

Playing hard, the Wolves mounted a seven-play drive, but a couple of penalties stalled the drive. Evanston took over and scored their final touchdown on another short run, taking a 44-7 lead and ending the scoring and the Wolves’ hopes for a playoff berth.
