Cross Country persevered through tough conditions

The Green River Wolves Girls and Boys Cross Country teams participated in the Lander Invitational this past week in between rain storms on a muddy cross country course at the Lander Golf and Country Club against ten other local teams.

Head Cross Country Coach Craig Leavitt commented that it was "a slick race with lots of kids slipping and falling in the mud on the hills." Coach Levitt felt that it would be likely that "our kids will be ordering spikes this week as those that did not have them wished that they did."

Despite the poor conditions for running the race, the team's times were close to the ideal condition times of their previous meet.

For the boys, the top finisher was Shay O'Melia, coming in eighth in 20.32.44 for the 5,000 Meter race, followed closely by Hale Iwen at ninth in 20:44.69, James Harper at 11th in 21:18.06 and Marcos Mandujano at 13th in 21:59.19. All of the boys runners on the varsity team for the day were seniors.

For the Lady Wolves, Isabelle Murdock, a sophomore, led the way in third place overall with a time of 22:49.31. She was followed by Junior Madison Murdock in fourth in 23:07.96. Lily Murdock, another sophomore, finished sixth in 23:20.47, followed closely by fellow sophomore Meeka Iwen in seventh in 23:53.59 and senior Jayleigh Wright taking 11th in 24:45.11.

Next up for the Cross Country team is the Shana Ward Memorial meet, hosted by Saratoga High School. Currently 15 other teams are registered for the meet.
