Last Friday the Green River Wolves celebrated their first win in two years.
The Wolves played host to the visiting Rawlins Outlaws, who were fresh off a big 39-7 win over Pinedale.
To start the game, Rawlins won the coin toss but deferred, electing to kick off the ball to the Wolves. The Wolves wasted no time in moving the ball behind some fine blocking from their offensive line. The Wolves' Jackson Mitchell ran the ball twice for 10 yards, and Jaxxson Gomez carried twice for seven yards, with Caleb Lake connecting on a big pass to Hunter Finley before Bracken Miller took the ball in from three yards out for the first score of the game. On a night with sustained winds in excess of 30 miles per hour and wind gusts of 45 miles an hour, the Wolves elected to not try to kick the ball for the P.A.T. and instead elected to try to run the ball in. They were successful as Caleb Lake took it in for a two-yard point after score, and the Wolves took an early 8-0 lead.
After the Wolves' kickoff was returned to the 30-yard line, the Wolves defense stopped Rawlins for losses on their first two offensive plays led by Hunter Finley, Jeremiah Selmo and Triston Drozd. On third down, the Wolves' defense stopped Rawlins for a short gain with a big tackle from Jackson Mitchell and the Outlaws were forced to punt.
The Wolves went back to their running game, with the big play coming on a 35-yard run by Gomez before Miller powered the ball into the end zone for his second touchdown of the game. The Wolves' two-point conversion try failed and the Wolves had a 14-0 lead.
After the Wolves' Jackson Mitchell made a big hit, Jeremiah Selmo recovered the fumble. Caleb Lake hooked up with Finley on a 44-yard touchdown pass, and with the two point conversion run good, the route was on with Green River extending their lead to 22-0.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Wolves tried an on-side kick, which they recovered. After a 15-yard run from Gomez, Lake completed a pass to Skyler Lee to the two-yard line, where Gomez took the ball in. With the two point try and a pass to Jackson Mitchell complete, the Wolves' offense appeared unstoppable as they took a 30-0 lead just after the start of the second quarter.
Rawlins then mounted a nine-play drive, but on the tenth play field goal attempt the kick was blocked and the shut-out was preserved. The two teams exchanged the ball without any scoring until Gomez broke through on a 70-yard run. With the point after pass incomplete, the Wolves had a 36-0 lead.
The Wolves' defense again came up big, stopping Rawlins on five plays so they had to punt the ball back to Green River. After some strong running by Mitchell and Miller, Gomez scored again on a 25-yard run, and the Wolves took a commanding 42-0 lead. Green River scored once more on a run late in the game, leading to the final score being 48-0 and the Wolves celebrating their first win in two years on a fantastic team effort on both sides of the ball and on special teams.
