Cross country team gains experience

Green River’s girls and boys cross country teams traveled this past weekend to Soda Springs, Idaho for a huge cross country regional meet with 40 schools and over 300 competitors from Southwest Wyoming, Idaho and Utah.

This meet included some of the top high school runners, providing a great competitive experience for area schools. Wyoming schools competing included Evanston, Mountain View, Rock Springs, Jackson, Star Valley, Lyman and Green River.

The Lady Wolves were led by junior Madison Murdock, who finished the 5,000 meter course in a time of 24:04.95, followed by sophomore Isabelle Murdock with a time of 24:50.82, with the third Lady Wolf under 25 minutes being Meeka Iwen, also a sophomore, coming in at 24:50.96. Jayleigh Wright, Lily Murdock, Liliana Adams, Pamela Pena Escalante and Ericka Robinson rounded out the competitive team for the Lady Wolves, all gaining valuable experience in the huge field.

The boys team had three competitors under 21 minutes also for the 5,000 meter distance, led by Nathan Stevensen in 18:29.59, followed by Hale Iwen at 20:25.43 and Shay O’Melia in 20:57.41. For the boys, James Harper, Marcos Mandujano, Keegan Gailey, Christian Oswald, Jordan Andrew and Ethan Egland also profited from competing in a major regional meet.

After the meet, Coach Leavitt commented: “The team improved their times and performances, and Madison Murdock had a particularly good day and a personal record from last week by over a minute.”

The Wolves Cross Country teams will be in another invitational meet, this time closer to home, as they compete Friday at the Rock Springs Invitational.
