Last weekend the Green River High School golf team headed to Evanston to compete at the Purple Sage golf course in the Evanston Invitational.
The team ended up with three boys in the top 20. Sophomore Ashton Lucero came in at 17th with a two-day total of 173 and Sophomore Kaleb Gunter tied for 15th for a two-day total of 172. Senior Ryker Mele was a top 10 medalist for the second consecutive week, coming in tied 10th with a two day total of 169. The boys team also finished in 4th overall for the second consecutive week.
On the girls' side, Junior Isabell Salas was the first place medalist, coming in with a two-day total of 147 - only 3 over par. She also had the tournament low score on both the girls' and boy's side for the second consecutive week. This was a great way to head into Conference for Salas as she'll sit out the Lander Invitational, according to Assistant Coach Danielle Salas. Salas earned an exemption and had the opportunity to play in the Utah Women's Open at the beginning of the high school season, only making her eligible for an additional eight tournament days leading up to the 3A State Championship, Coach Salas explained.
"Purple Sage was a great challenge both mentally and physically for GRHS Golf and a great way to prepare for both Conference and State," Coach Salas said.
This week, the Wolves head to the Lander Invitational.
