After winning the 3A state championships two years in a row, the Green River High School girls swim team is back in the pool and ready to take on another season.
"I think that we have a great crew of returning swimmers, and we had some nice freshmen join the team, so I'm feeling really good about them," Head Coach Colleen Seiloff said about the team. "They're working hard. This first week they're already sore and they're putting a lot of time in, so I'm excited about this season. I think it's gonna be great."
The team is solid across the board, according to Seiloff. The incoming freshmen joining the team all have some degree of experience, she said, whether from swimming in middle school or being part of clubs. And the more experienced team members create a core of talent.
"They are good at not just one stroke, but they're good at all the strokes, so they're versatile," Seiloff explained.
Another area the team is stronger in this year is the diving team, which has added new members who Seiloff believes are good divers and will make a tough team.
Since there is always room for improvement, Seiloff stresses having the team work on all the strokes and focus on their technique.
"We always, always, always, always need to work on technique," she said, "and just working together and coming together as a team."
While the team always takes things one meet at a time, Seiloff is looking forward to the chance to go to the state championship, which will be hosted in Laramie this year.
"We'll definitely be back at state," Seiloff said. "Are we going to be in contention? It's gonna be up to these girls if they want to be in contention or not."
While she believes the team is solid and can be competitive and fight for the top spots, Seiloff stressed it's up to the girls to work hard and decide if they want to win another state title.
"Like I always tell the girls, when state's over and they tell us the score, we'll know if we won state or not," Seiloff said. "So until then, we're gonna work hard and do the best that we can and be the most prepared."
The first step on the road back to state will be this weekend's meet in Gillette, with a relay meet on Friday and a Pentathlon on Saturday. Seiloff said she always enjoys going to Gillette and swimming in their pool, and the relay is a "stress-free meet" and a fun way to start the season. The pentathlon also serves as a good opportunity to see where the team is at starting out since it involves all the team members swimming all the different strokes.
"It just allows us to get that kind of snapshot of where they're at and what we've got to work on," Seiloff explained.
