Cross country team hits the ground running

The Green River High School Cross Country team is ready to run.

Head Coach Craig Leavitt is especially excited about the returning talent in the girls team this season.

“It’s a good girls team,” Leavitt said. “We didn’t lose any girls that were here last year that ran state, so they’re all returning runners. They’ve had a good track season and are coming into this season pretty strong.”

This may be the strongest the girls team has been in 30 years, according to Leavitt, which he believes is due to the girls themselves and their dedication. He pointed out it’s also one of the largest teams, with an exceptional amount of team members both last year and this year.

“When I first started here 10 years ago, you could hardly get two or three girls to come out, and now we have nine, 10 girls every season,” Leavitt said, adding “we’re getting there.”

The boys team also has several returning students this season, as well as a few new faces. Leavitt said he’s excited to have so many seniors among both the boys and girls and a lot of experienced athletes.

“We’re getting more numbers every year and we’re getting faster every year,” Leavitt said.

The coach is also confident the team will be ranked for state and hopes they’ll be able to place, if not win. He believes the team has “a lot of flat talent,” and the season will be fun.

The cross country team will get to start running at home this Friday during the Green River Invite at the Rolling Green Country Club golf course.
