Republicans file for county elections

Many elections will be decided in August

A large number of Republican candidates have filed for Sweetwater County’s leadership positions, leading many races to be decided in the Republican Primary Election Aug. 16 if independent candidates are not added to the Nov. 8 General Election ballot.

The filing period for many local and state offices ended Friday.

The largest field of candidates is the group vying for the three available positions on the Sweetwater County Board of County Commissioners, with nine Republicans filed to run. No Democrats have filed for election to the office.

The field of candidates includes two incumbents, Roy Lloyd and Jeff Smith. Randy Wendling, who will finish his second term as a county commissioner at the end of the year, did not file for re-election. Both Smith and Lloyd are finishing their first term.

The two face seven challengers in their re-election bid from a group consisting of Robb Slaughter, Island Richards, Lester Mauch, Chris Davis, Jeff Ramaj, Keaton West, and Bill Formanek.

Another race that will likely be decided in August is for Sweetwater County Clerk of District Court, which is between incumbent Donnalee Bobak and her primary challenger Annette Eychner. The two faced each other in the 2018 General Election with Bobak winning her re-election bid. Eychner was a Democrat in 2018, but has since shifted her party affiliation to the GOP.

Voters will see an electoral rematch in August in the race for Sweetwater County Assessor with Perri Rubeck facing incumbent Dave Divis for the position. The two faced each other in the 2018 General Election with Divis as a Democrat and Rubeck as the Republican challenger.

For Sweetwater County Clerk, Republican voters will decide between incumbent Cindy Lane and her challenger Anita Frey, with the winner of that election not currently slated to face a challenger in November.

For Sweetwater County Sheriff, two Republicans are vying for the party’s nomination. Incumbent John Grossnickle faces challenger and former Rock Springs Police Chief Dwane Pocheco in the primary, with the winner of that race facing Chris Sutton in November. Sutton is running as an independent candidate.

Three Republicans have filed to seek election to be the next Sweetwater County Treasurer. Stephen Allen, Mark Cowan and Tony Yerkovich have created a three-way race that will determine who will face incumbent Democrat Joe Barbuto in November.

Two candidates are not facing a challenge to their re-election bids. Republican Sweetwater County Attorney Dan Erramouspe and Democrat Sweetwater County Coroner Dale Mahjanovich are both the sole candidates filed in their respective races.
