Regional track champions crowned in Casper

The Green River High School track teams competed at Casper Natrona High School in the West 4A Regionals last week, giving the top eight finishers qualifying a chance to go back to Casper this week for the Wyoming State Track Championships at Kelly Walsh High School.

The Lady Wolves’ regional team consisted of two seniors, two juniors, two sophomores and eight freshmen. The two seniors led the way by both winning their specialty events.

Kaelea Gibson was the region 4A champion in the high jump, clearing 5-04 inches, while teammate Lillian Munoz won her specialty, the 300-meter intermediate hurdles, in a time of 47.65. She also qualified for state in the 100 meter hurdles taking fourth.

Also in the high jump, junior Autumn Casey cleared 4-08 for sixth place to qualify for State, as did freshman Mikayla Dockter. Dockter finished seventh by also clearing 4-08. Dockter also qualified for State in the pole vault, taking eighth place by clearing 8-06.

The other State qualifiers for the girls were Madison Murdock, who finished in sixth place in the 300-meter hurdles and freshman thrower Lillian Allison, who finished seventh in the discus and sixth in the shot put to earn their tickets to State.

State qualifiers for the boys included senior Cole Murray, who qualified in both of his throwing events by taking third in the discus and sixth in the shot put. Dillon Davis also qualified in both throws taking eighth in the discus and sixth in the shot put.

Hayden Roberts qualified in three events, taking sixth in the 300-meter hurdles, fifth in the high jump and third in the 110-meter hurdles.

The top performance for the Wolves came from sophomore Christopher Wilson, who qualified for State in four events by placing sixth in the 110-meter hurdles, fourth in the 300-meter hurdles, third in the long jump with his season’s best of 21-4.50 and finished as the region champion in the triple jump, with another season’s best of 42.02.50.

There were approximately 20 competitors on the regional team that did not qualify for State, and all but one can return next year as the girls regional team was mostly made up of freshman, while the boys were dominated by juniors who can return.

The weather forecast for State is for another windy day which the competitors have gotten used to this season so the Wolves will be looking forward to heading to Casper one final time this week.
