Upcoming soccer game decides Wolves' future

One last trip to Casper didn’t end the way the Green River Wolves would have preferred last weekend as the team returned home with two losses before they participate in the west regional soccer tournament this week.

The boys took on Kelly Walsh Friday in a game that ended with a 4-1 win for the Trojans. The following day, the Wolves battled against the Natrona County Mustangs, taking a second loss in a 4-2 effort.

The 4A West Regional Boys Soccer Tournament takes place in Jackson with action starting Thursday. The Wolves are seeded fourth in the tournament and will take on fifth-seeded Star Valley at 5 p.m. The winner of that game will face first-seed Jackson Friday at 3 p.m. The Wolves head into the tournament with a 5-6-1 record and a win over Star Valley.

The first meeting between the two teams ended in a 1-0 win for the Wolves at home, while their second game in Afton resulted in the Wolves’ only tie of the season. Regardless of which team succeeds Thursday evening, a strong Jackson squad will be ready to face them Friday. Jackson has a 11-1 conference record and has soundly defeated many of the 4A west teams this season. Green River’s most recent game in Jackson ended in an 8-0 loss April 23, while Star Valley took a 10-0 loss to Jackson May 5.

The top four teams will advance to the state soccer tournament in Cheyenne next week. Green River will have to win against Star Valley to advance to the tournament as a loss in that game will end the Wolves’ season.
