Track team aims high at home

The Wyoming weather played havoc with the spring track season as the week prior to the second Green River Invite most meets throughout the state were canceled. The Puncher Invite in Big Piney and this week’s home invite were started a little early Friday morning in an attempt to beat the wind and rain, but the meet did not make it as several events were canceled.

The Wolves were also scheduled to compete in Morgan, Utah Saturday, but canceled their attendance at that meet as the weather predicted was filled with more wind and rain.

However, most of the home meet events did get completed Friday before the rains opened up and a number of competitors despite the conditions recorded their season’s best. The field was half the size of the first Green River Invite with only eight teams competing from throughout Southwest Wyoming.

For the girls in the 100-meter dash Lillian Munoz took third and improved on her season’s best of 14.25 by finishing in 13.55, while Ericka Robinson took 14th in 14.77 in the field of 33 sprinters.

In the 1,600-meter run, the Lady Wolves fielded one runner with Makynzee Bagshaw taking fifth in 7:25.77. In the 100-meter hurdles Natalie Walgren finished 18th in 27.80. The 4X800-meter run had the closest finish on the day with the team of Isabelle, Lily and Madison Murdock and Meeka Iwen finishing second, improving their season best by about 16 seconds.

In the 1,600 sprint medley relay the girls took second out of the three teams entered. The high jump had the largest group of Lady Wolves entered with Kealea Gibson leading the way taking second place with a leap of 5-0 even followed by Autumn Casey fifth, Madison Moffat in sixth, Rylee Rosas at seventh, and Eva Murray in 15th. The pole vault saw two of the Green River competitors improving on their season best led by Madison Moffat who cleared 8-0 to finish second, with fewer misses at lower heights, while Mikayla Dockter in fourth with the same height, and Autumn Casey taking tenth.

As the winds picked up as did the rain Rylee Rosas took 12th in the long jump with teammate Ericka Robinson talking 25th. Eva Murray was the lone entrant in the triple jump increasing her season best by 5.5 inches in taking 5th place. The shot put had no season bests as the rain made instruments and throwing pads wetter, with Lillian Allison in 6th Malea Gomez 28th and Renea Barnes taking 32nd with the same three finishing in the same order with Allison taking fourth Gomez 25th and Barnes 33rd.

The boys had six sprinters in the 100-meter field led by Jacob Schieve 20th, Roy Steen in 26th, Mark Nelson 29th, Dallan Rosen 31st and James Eason 32nd and Christian Oswald 33rd. In the 1,600 meter run, Logan Gray was 11th with Jordan Andrew 12th. Hayden Roberts took second in the 110-meter hurdles followed by team mate Christopher Wilson in sixth place. The boys 4X800-meter relay team of Nathan Stevenson, Lucas Knight, James Harper and Marcus Mandujano took first, with the team competing in the 1,600 sprint medley relay taking third out of three teams. In the high jump Roberts took third with Chaz Helmandollar in seventh and Schieve eighth.

The triple jump was led by Wilson who took 1st place with a leap of 40.00.50. The boys shot put saw a couple throwers setting their season’s best led by Dillon Davis who took second and improving almost 3 feet to 45.02.50 with Cole Murray taking third, Kylar Barnett also improving his season’s best by about 3 feet followed by Trysten Halter sixth and Silas Chetterbock also improving about 6 inches.

At afternoon break when the girls and boys throwers exchange events, shot and discus and jumpers go from triple jump to long jump the rain increased and the rest of the meet had to be cancelled. Many of the same teams that attended this meet will hope for better conditions for the Mountain Man Invitational Track Meet at Pinedale High School Friday.
