On a blustery wind chilled day in early spring, the Green River girls and boys track teams took the short drive to Rock Springs Saturday to compete with 13 other Southwest Wyoming track teams used to this unpredictable April weather to compete in the annual Ted Schroeder Invitational, named for the school’s former track coach.
Times and distances were impacted due to the strong winds and the accompanying wind chills. While this was generally the case, there were some exceptional efforts especially considering weather conditions.
The girls team finished just ahead of the middle of the pack, taking sixth out of the 14 teams while the boys took third out of 14.
All three entrants for the girls in the 100-meter dash finished in the top half of the field of 58 sprinters, led by freshman Rylee Rosas taking 11th and improving her season’s best to 13.65. Rosas was followed by Kaelea Gibson in 14th and Ericka Robinson at 26th.
In the 200-meter dash, the Lady Wolves had just two sprinters, led by Robinson 23rd improving her season best to 31.17 followed by Autumn Casey in 35th place. The girls also had three sprinters in the 400 meters, led by Gibson in 4th place. She improved her season’s best by almost two seconds at 1:08.56 and was followed by Madison Moffat in 13th and Casey in 22nd.
There were also two runners in the 800-meter run led by freshman Meeka Iwen. She took ninth in 3:00.92 and was followed by Makynzee Bagshaw in 12th place. The Wolves lined up four runners in the 1,600-meter run, with Isabelle Murdock in second place in 6:12.37, followed by Lily Murdock seventh, Meeka Iwen in ninth and Bradshaw 13th.
There was just one entrant in the 300-meter hurdles as Madison Murdock, who took sixth in the field of 16 hurdlers. In the 4x400 relay, the Lady Wolves had two teams taking fifth and sixth out of eight relay entrants. While there was only two teams entered in the 4x800 and the girls took first place.
In the field events Kalea Gibson came up with her best jump of the season clearing 5-04 to finish in first place, Casey took fourth, followed by Mikayla Dockter in sixth and Rosas in ninth, Madison Moffat 10th and Eva Murray 14th. In addition to the high jump, pole vault is another field event which can be affected by the wind. Dockter led the way in this event with another season best clearing 8-0 to take fifth place, followed by Madison Moffat in sixth, Lannie Fundell 10th and Cassie Tibbets also finishing in 10th place. Eva Murray was the lone Green River entrant in the triple jump, setting a season best for herself finishing in eighth place.
Both throws were led by sophomore Lydia Westenskow taking 36th in the shot put, improving her season’s best by almost two feet at 24-05. She was followed by Malea Gomez 32nd and Renae Barnes in 45th. The three girls finished in the same order in discus, led by Westenskow in 30th, followed by Gomez in 32nd and Barnes 46th.
For the boys in the 100-meter dash Jacob Schieve led the way taking 14th in the large field of 72 sprinters, with the rest of the huge field for the Wolves being underclassmen led by Brayden Lennon in 17th, Trace Erdman in 33rd, Mark Nelson in 36th, Chaz Helmandollar in 37th Roy Steen in 39th, Dakota Walker in 43rd and James Eason in 52nd. The 200-meter sprint only had two Wolves entrants with Lennon taking 12th and Helmandollar 35th. Walker led the sprinters in the 400 meters taking 14th with Eason taking 17th. Nathan Stevenson led another large contingent of Wolf boys in the 800-meter run taking seventh, followed by Lucas Knight in 17th, James Harper 21st, Marcus Mandujano 28th, Logan Gray 29th and Andrew Jordan 31st.
Knight was the top distance runner on the day in the 1,600-meter run finishing in fifth place in 5.34.40 followed by Harper eighth, Gray 14th and Jordan 15th. Stevenson again led the way in the 3,200-meter run with a big improvement in his seasons best to 10.55.77, followed by Marcus Mandujano in 21st, also with a season best outing.
Senior Hayden Roberts took first place in the 110 hurdles with a fine time of 15.12, followed by Christopher Wilson in 5th place. Wilson also took 4th place in the 300-meter hurdles. Roberts scored a double on the day also finishing in first place in the high jump, clearing 6-0, followed by Lennon in third and Helmandollar eighth.
The pole vault was led by Schieve clearing 10-0, followed by Trace Erdman in eighth and Christain Oswald ninth. Wilson had a fine day in the jumps as he took home first place in both the long jump and triple jump, improving his season’s best in the long jump to 20-08, followed by Lennon who improved to 18-05 in fifth, Helmandollar in 12th and Roy Steen in 20th. Wilson jumped 40-11.50 in winning the triple jump.
In the throws, Cole Murray led the way in the shot put by taking third as he improved his season’s best to 46-07:50, followed by Trysten Halter in fourth also throwing his seasons best at 43-04, with Dillon Davis in seventh and Silas Chetterbock in 57th.
Murray led a field of five Wolves in the discus taking second at 141-10, Dillon Davis improving three feet to 118-10, James Eason improving 15 feet to take 17th, followed by Halter and Chetterbock.
