Hall of Fame honors former educator, superintendent

The Green River High School Hall of Fame will induct its 2022 class Sept. 9, honoring a longtime educator and former athletics director, the superintendent of schools in Rawlins, a naval aviator, a doctor and the 1974 athletic and activities teams.

Tom Wilson heads up the list released by Tony Beardsley, activities director for Sweetwater County School District No. 2. Wilson is a graduate of GRHS who returned and became a longtime educator, coach and athletics director for the district. Wilson is credited with creating the hall of fame in 2009 while working as the district’s athletics director, a post he had for 14 years. He was the head football coach for 13 years, amassing 53 career wins, the most of any GRHS football coach. Wilson was the head coach for the Shrine Bowl in 1993. He also was an All-State football player in high school.

The second inductee is Mike Hamel, the superintendent of schools in Rawlins and the all-time pin leader for the University of Wyoming’s wrestling program. Hamel serves as a member of the Wyoming High School Athletics Association Executive Board. As a wrestler, Hamel achieved a tremendous amount of success for the Wolves and Cowboys, being a state high school wrestling champion and a three-time WAC champion. His contributions to the UW program resulted in him being inducted into UW’s athletic hall of fame.

Brent Foster is an aviator and instructor at the Office of Naval Research and the Naval War College. He pioneered the development of new maritime patrol tactical air crew protocols and was selected as one of the first naval tactical coordinators.

He was originally selected in 2021, but will be honored and placed at the 2022 hall of fame.

Dr. Jeffery Bauer, the fourth inductee, is an internationally-recognized health care futurist and medical economist with more than 300 publications to his name.

He is a University of Colorado Health Sciences Center associate professor and is the assistant chancellor for planning and programming development. He earned his Ph.D in economics from the University of Colorado and is a Boettcher Scholar and Ford Foundation Independent Scholar.

The activities and athletics teams of 1974 will also be inducted into the hall of fame. The football, golf, wrestling and boys and girls swimming teams took state during that school year, with the boys basketball and track and field teams placing third that year. Additionally, the high school’s industrial arts program won a state championship. At the time, GRHS only offered seven sports through its athletics department.

The hall of fame game takes place Sept. 9 against Rawlins at Wolves Stadium, while a banquet and social will take place Sept. 10.
