Track team stays competitive at Alpha Invitational meet in Utah

The Green River High School track team traveled south this past Thursday and Friday to compete with 30 other high schools in Orem, Utah. With as many as 150 competitors in some events, the huge two-day Utah Regional Track Meet was the stage where many Green River competitors showed improvements in times and distances from the previous week.

The teams were also split up for this meet as the mostly younger track competitors stayed home for a junior varsity meet in Lyman Thursday.

In a large field of 124 distance runners, freshman Isabelle Murdock led the way for the Lady Wolves in the 1,600-meter run, taking 56th with a time of 5:54.21, followed by sophomore Madison Murdock in 62nd, Lily Murdock in 73rd and Meeka Iwen at 105th.

For the boys in the 1,600 meters, junior Nathan Stevenson was the Wolves' top finisher in the field of 128 runners, finishing in 56th place and breaking the five-minute mark with a time of 4:57.08.

He was followed by junior Hale Iwen in 91st, sophomore Lucas Knight in 117th and junior James Harper 123rd.

In the 110-meter hurdles, senior Hayden Roberts finished 10th with teammate Christopher Wilson taking 19th in the field of 69 hurdlers.

Autumn Casey, a junior, was the only Lady Wolves sprinter in the 100-meter dash, finishing in 110th place.

The Wolves' 300-meter hurdles competition was again led by Roberts in 18th at 44.24, followed closely by Wilson in 23rd in 44.82.

With 44 high jumpers in the girls field, Kealea Gibson was the top finisher for the Lady Wolves, placing sixth with a leap of 5-0, followed closely by teammate Casey in 12th at 4-11.

The boys high jump was led by Roberts in eighth place at 5-10, with Wilson taking 27th after clearing 5-02. Wilson also took 12th place in the long jump with a leap of 20-0.

In the 3,200-meter race for the girls and competing in the field of more than 50 runners, Isabelle Murdock was the top finisher for Green River finishing in 25th place with a time of 12:32.26, followed by Madison Murdock in 35th, Lily Murdock in 40th and Meeka Iwen 44th.

The boys, in an even larger field of 86 runners, had Hale Iwen lead the way for the Wolves in 71st place at 11:28.96, followed by Lucas Knight in 76th and James Harper in 84th.

The girls had five runners in the 800-meter run, again led by Isabelle Murdock in 48th, followed by Madison Murdock in 58th, Lily Murdock at 114th and Meeka Iwen in 118th.

The boys had Hale Iwen lead the way in 78th place at 2:15.71 followed by Knight in 97th at 2:22.46 and Harper 109th at 2:31.28.

In the throwing events, Cole Murray led the way and was the top overall finisher for the boys after taking sixth place in the discus with a throw of 141-07, followed by Kyler Bartlett, 45th, Hunter Finley in 47th and Trysten Halter at 48th in a field of 78 throwers.

In the shot put, Murray again led the way for Green River by taking 14th out of 69 throwers, with Bartlett in 24th, Halter at 27th and Finley 31st.

"At the Alpha, there were over 1,500 athletes entered in the meet. We had several P.Rs. (personal records) and three kids who placed. The girls distance runners of Meeka Iwen, Madison, Izzy and Lily Murdock all made great progress and raced well," head track coach Dan Hansen said.

Hansen also said "this week is going to be a challenge, but we are up for it."

The meet this week is in Rock Springs takes place Saturday, which is expected to showcase windy weather with high temperatures in the 60s and winds at 25 mph and higher.
