Our View: Arts are well supported throughout Sweetwater County

Sweetwater County residents have three plays they can take in the next few weeks. They can watch Green River High School present “A Comedy of Errors” by William Shakespeare, watch Western Wyoming Community College’s presentation of “Uncle Vanya” or watch the Actors’ Mission perform the original play “A Reason.”

In Rock Springs, a reception took place March 31 for recipients of the Mayor’s Arts Awards, an event that culminates a month-long celebration of the arts in Rock Springs and honors the award’s recipients. Four awards recognized the Sweetwater County Concert Association, photographer and longtime Community Fine Arts Center board member RJ Pieper, retired music educator Sarah Wessel and Actors’ Mission playwright and actress Nina Tyler.

These events show a dedication to the arts throughout Sweetwater County that give residents a chance to experience a variety of artistic endeavors. Later this year, the Green River Arts Council will host its annual Art on the Green festival that showcases a variety of 2D and 3D artwork. Local musicians are often a focal point during summer events hosted in both Green River and Rock Springs.

Having such a lively arts scene helps Sweetwater County develop a unique identity and gives its residents the opportunity to personally grow and benefit from the multitude of arts already supported here. We believe more should be done to grow existing events and shows taking place throughout the year, either through additional financial support or experimentation with new events. For example, the Broadway Theater could be a great host for a small film festival, with plenty of restaurants and other amenities nearby that would benefit from it.

The arts offer a tremendous opportunity for the county, for both business and education, and we’re happy to see they’re so well supported here. We think more support would benefit everyone in the future.
