The Green River High School boys swim team headed to Gillette for the state competition last weekend and came home with a fourth-place finish and a strong showing from the diving team.
Wolves' divers topped the leaderboard in diving. Braxton Cordova was the diving state champion for the second year in a row, taking first with a score of 447.40. Fellow Wolves Kyle Kight and River Kirts took second and third place respectively.
"Those guys have just been battling out and pushing each other all year and so it was great to watch them finish that way," head coach Colleen Seiloff said.
Rick Barker, the GRHS diving coach, was also named "Assistant Coach of the Year" at the state tournament.
Although the rest of the swimmers didn't match the success of the diving team, they had a strong showing, with Wolves coming in the top 10 in seven events, and Brady Young taking second in the 500 Yard Freestyle and third in the 200 Yard Freestyle, receiving all state honors.
"I was just really pleased with the way state came out and I thought the boys swam really well," Seiloff said. "They really came to state to compete and it was just fun to watch. So as a coaching staff we were really excited with where we finished with the young team that we had."
Out of the 16 swimmers that went to state, roughly half were freshmen. Seiloff is hopeful the team members will continue to swim and practice during the off-season and come back even stronger next year.
