A sleepy Southern town will find its home in Sweetwater County when the Actors’ Mission puts on their upcoming production of the play “Second Samuel.”
In order to bring the story and characters to life, the Actors’ Mission is hosting auditions to cast the 11 roles featured in the play.
“Second Samuel,” written by Pamela Parker, tells the story of a town in South Georgia in the 1940s which is turned upside down after Miss Gertrude dies and dark secrets in the town are revealed.
“This show gives us an opportunity to cast a wide range of ages and diverse identities,” Director Kenneth Starling said. “I was in this show way back in 2013 in South Carolina and I’m excited to bring it to the west.”
The play includes seven male and four female roles, ranging in age from 12 to 60 or older.
Most roles are open to any race, but because of the nature of the story some roles specify whether the character is caucasian, and one role is specifically African American. The Actors’ Mission explained in an online statement the organization is committed to diverse and inclusive casting, but because this play addresses sensitive subjects including racism, transphobia and ableism, this play will include “color and identity conscious casting in an effort to better represent the perspectives of marginalized individuals.”
Open auditions will be held Friday, Feb. 18 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 19 at 3 p.m. at the Broadway Theater in downtown Rock Springs. Anyone who would like to audition but is unable to make it during the open audition times can email Starling at kenn.starling@gmail.com for other options. No prepared materials are required. Those who audition will read dialogue from the script with other people who are auditioning. No prior theatrical experience is required, but those who have a resume and headshot are asked to bring them.
Those who are cast will have the first read-through at the end of February and will rehearse 3-4 nights a week. Tech week will be April 23-37 and is mandatory for cast members. “Second Samuel” will be performed April 28 - May 8.
