The Green River High School girls basketball team continued their conference record undefeated after beating Star Valley last Saturday.
The Lady Wolves stayed ahead of Star Valley throughout the game and finished with a score of 45-29.
“The defense led to the offense, so that was good for us,” Coach Rick Carroll said.
Carroll explained the defense did a good job pressing, which led to runs where the Lady Wolves were able to score lots of points quickly. He also credited the defense with helping achieve the win by keeping track of the other team and holding them back from scoring.
“We out-rebounded them, so that was good, because we haven’t done that a lot of times this year, and so saw some improvement there,” Carroll added.
While the offense started a little slow against Star Valley in the first half, they improved in the second half, according to Carroll.
“We were pretty consistent throughout the game,” he said.
Now that the Lady Wolves have played all the teams in their quad, they’ll start conference games against the teams in the other quad making up the western part of the state. The team will take on Rock Springs tonight at 5:30, then face Natrona on Saturday.
“The Rock Springs game is obviously our rivals there, and it’s always a really intense atmosphere,” Carroll said. “You’ve got two teams that I think are playing really well right now, so you should see a really good contest.”
Conference games are important since they determine the team’s standing in regionals, Carroll explained, so he hopes the team will do well and continue to improve.
“I think we still need to continue to work on fewer turnovers and I think we need to do a better job of rebounding still,” he said. “I think those are two really big things that we need to improve on as we move forward.”
Despite the room for improvement and the big games coming up this week, Carroll is confident in the team’s abilities.
“I think we still have our best basketball to come,” he said.
