Lady Wolves begin conference 2-0

Conference has started for girls basketball, and the Lady Wolves have started with two wins. The Green River High School team faced Evanston last Thursday and Jackson last Saturday.

“I felt like we played pretty good in both games,” Coach Rick Carroll said. “Still have things to work on, but in general I thought we played really hard.”

The game against Evanston stayed close until the very end, but the Lady Wolves came out on top with a final score of 48-41.

“We knew Evanston was really going to be a dogfight,” Carroll said. “It’s a really good rivalry.”

Carroll explained the Evanston team is aggressive and physically bigger and taller than the GRHS team, so the Lady Wolves had to find ways to slow them down. Green River tied the game at the end of the third quarter, then took the lead in the fourth and finished with the win.

Megan Counts led the team in scoring against Evanston, contributing 17 points, with Daryn Macy scoring 11 points. Counts also had eight rebounds and Alyssa Cudney had three. Macy had four steals, while Counts, Ella Stanton and Sarah Wilson all had three steals. Carroll noted lots of different people on the team had good contributions in different areas throughout the game, including players who came off the bench and scored points.

The Saturday game against Jackson wasn’t as close, finishing with a 60-32 Green River victory, but it was still a chance for the Lady Wolves to learn and improve.

“I think we were playing okay in the first half, but I don’t think we had any sense of urgency or worry as far as defense is concerned,” Carroll explained. “So we kind of talked about getting after it a little bit on defense.”

The first half ended 30-23. In the second half, after the defense stepped up, Green River scored another 30 points while Jackson only scored nine more points. Carroll believes frustrating Jackson’s guards and getting turnovers helped Green River get the win. He also noted the Jackson team, like Evanston, has bigger team members than the Lady Wolves.

“Because we are a little bit under-sized against those two teams, we have to find some creative ways to see if we can get them to turn the ball over,” Carroll said.

The stat sheet for the game was again filled by Counts, who contributed 21 points, nine steals, eight rebounds and seven assists. Macy had 11 points, Wilson had 10 and Stanton had five.

“We have a lot of girls contributing,” Carroll said. “The girls starting and the girls coming off the bench are doing a good job.”

Looking to the next few weeks, the Lady Wolves will play Star Valley this weekend — the last team in their quad. The next two weeks they’ll play four teams in the other quad on our side of the state before again facing their three quad members.

“All these games are just really important as far as seeding for the regional tournament,” Carroll explained.

When it comes to improving during conference, the Lady Wolves’ offense hopes to be more aggressive, get to the free throw line more often, reduce turnovers and work on being patient in order to find the best shots.

The defense continues to work on ways to create pressure and make people make mistakes and play faster than they want to.

“We’re just making sure we’re working hard and trying to fix the things we need to fix, get a little bit better in some spots, and see if we can’t play a little bit better each game that we go out,” Carroll said.
