The Green River High School boys swim team stayed busy last week with three meets in Lander and at home, but the highlight was when one of the team’s divers set a new record.
Braxton Cordova broke the school record and pool record during the home meet at GRHS last Thursday with a score of 455.55.
“It was a 30-year-old record,” Coach Colleen Seiloff said, explaining the previous diving record was set in 1992.
The home meet was a good one for the whole team, coming in second place with 244 points and having team members take first place in four events.
“We always seem to swim well at home, and so that’s always nice,” Seiloff said. “All of the divers had a great day, they all had personal bests, so that was nice to see.”
Seiloff highlighted some of the swimmers who have been doing well, including Brady Young and Zeke Reading, and some of the freshmen who continue to step up and get things done, such as Colin Gilmore, Aiden Zimmerman, Ahston Hafner and Trace Erdmann.
“I could mention them all,” Seiloff added. “They’re all improving.”
Last week the team also attended two meets in Lander. On Tuesday GRHS and Lander went head-to-head in a dual. Seiloff explained the meet was put together quickly since many meets were canceled due to weather. No team scores were kept during the dual.
“It was basically about just getting a chance to swim,” Seiloff said. “You know, the more that you swim when you have a young team the more confident they become and . . . the experience is good for them.”
Last Saturday the swimmers returned to Lander for the Bruce Gresly Invite, which 10 teams participated in.
“We got a chance to go against some teams that we hadn’t got to compete against this weekend, so that was good,” Seiloff said.
This weekend, the team will head to Gillette for one more meet before the conference meet in Lyman next week. The team currently has 12 swimmers qualified for state, but Seiloff is hoping to add a few more in Gillette.
“Hopefully we can pull off some fast times for some of our kids and get them qualified,” she said.
