A hard-fought and low-scoring basketball game ended in a loss for the Lady Wolves Friday night.
The Lady Wolves basketball program was the only group traveling to Gillette last week as the boys’ game was canceled after the Green River boys were unable to compete due to illness impacting several members of the team.
The girls played a hard-fought game with Thunder Basin, but according to head coach Rick Carroll, offensive mistakes and the girls losing steam during the second half resulted in the 41-30 loss.
“I feel like they played very hard,” Carroll said about the girls.
Carroll said Thunder Basin wasn’t able to extend the lead until the final quarter, capitalizing on turnovers from missed offensive rebounds from the Lady Wolves and fouls placing Thunder Basin’s players on the free throw line. He said the lead Thunder Basin built at the end didn’t materialize until the fourth quarter.
“They just slowly took advantage of those turnovers,” he said.
The girls will take on Evanston Thursday in their first conference game. Carroll said the game represents the stakes getting higher for the Lady Wolves. Carroll said he has worked with the girls on the issues he saw during the Thunder Basin game, hoping the team will be playing their best basketball against both Evanston and during their away game against Jackson Saturday. He said if the girls are able to apply pressure to both teams and cause them to make mistakes, the girls should end the weekend with wins.
Varsity action against Evanston starts at 6 p.m. for the girls at Green River High School, while the boys game will take place at 7:30 p.m.
