Wolves close season with 51-7 loss

The Wolves completed a very tough schedule with a one-sided loss to the always tough Star Valley to finish the season 0-8 despite playing hard and never giving up all season.

The Braves got 221 yards rushing from their top running back and had no less than 23 players on the team with an offensive stat as they spread the ball around and played error-free ball with no turnovers.

The Wolves had a respectable 310 yards in total offense including six receptions to senior wide receiver Dylan Taylor, who set the all-time single-season pass receiving record previously held by Tanner Trumble for Green River.

The Wolves started the game with an impressive 10-play drive, but on the 11th play they attempted a field goal which fell just short and the ball was turned over to the Braves. In the drive senior Hayden Roberts, coming back from a week off due to injury, ran strong for over 50 yards.

Star Valley had a similar long first drive but were able to convert on a 34-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead as Green River’s defense played tough. The Wolves then ran five plays before having to punt the ball back to the Braves.

Except for a short gain on a shovel pass, the Braves ran the ball, taking just five plays for a touchdown.

With the P.A.T good, it was 10-0. On the first play from scrimmage on their next offensive series, the Wolves fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Star Valley, who scored in just one play on a pass and again kicked the extra point with a 17-0 lead.

Once again the Wolves got the ball and on their second play from scrimmage, they were intercepted and turned the ball immediately back to the Braves after a big return off the interception.

A 49-yard run and the Braves were up 24-0 after what looked like a promising start for the Wolves on their first offensive and defensive series.

The Wolves ran six plays, but stalled and had to punt. The Braves once again had scored to up the score to 31-0.

Unfortunately for the Wolves, almost the same pattern repeated itself on the next series and the Braves on just three plays were rolling 38-0.

The teams traded series with similar results in the second half with Star Valley eventually taking a 51-point lead.

Despite the obvious one sided nature of the game, the Wolves never gave up and eventually quarterback Caleb Lake took the ball into the endzone on a 10-yard run and with the P.A.T. kick good, they avoided the complete shut out by playing hard and never giving up. Their head coach, Kevin Cuthbertson, noted throughout the season they always played hard, practiced hard and “never gave up.”

Among the individual accomplishments on the season, Taylor, in addition to breaking the all-time single-season record for receptions, also set new all time records for reception in a career, with 98 catches. He also set the total yard in receiving record for a career by getting 1,490 yards to break the previous best of Devan Love of 1,144.

Players of the game were seniors Tristen Fundell, who had an excellent defensive performance, 55 yards on 10 carries, and four receptions for Senior Hayden Roberts who missed just one game after being taken from the field on a stretcher.

In the end Cuthbertson again applauded his seniors for their leadership throughout a tough season and praised all of the players for a no quit, hard working effort.

The coach noted there are a lot of good young players returning and while they will miss the seniors off season is time to get right back to work to prepare for next year.
